Just added a few layers of self etching primer and I will let it sit a few days before trying the black wrinkle paint.

Main mount tube got shot with primer also.

I will be spraying it next with a filler primer so I can sand it a bit smoother for a very nice finish (I hope).

I have the exact same sky giant focuser but mine dosent have a round base. It seemed to ride on the cave tube just fine though.

OK, I stopped at the local sherwin williams automotive paint store (never heard of these before) and ask them about the paint color I wanted. It seems as if on the internet, that the color Ford Massey grey is very hard to get. At my local paint store I ask if they had ever heard of it. "Yes, I have", the clerk said, "And what year do you want?". He then showed me three Ford Massey grey colors from the past with barely a difference between the three. I mean they were so close you could have chosen any one of them and it would have not mattered. I picked one out and they mixed a quart.

The guy was so helpful. He printed out a "beginners" sheet on how to mix the three products and adjust the sprayer. He sold me a reducer (by temperature) and a hardener for the paint. He gave me lots of free paint filter cones and sent me on my way just ready to tackle the project. Here is a card I painted taped to my recent mayflower acquisition. The color is almost identical.

So this is the color the mount will be.

I really do to. It is a warmer grey than most use. Industrial grey has a cooler color. After pulling chips from everywhere, I found this color on the Internet. But to my surprise, It turns out to be almost the exact color that cave used on this scope. Either I ignored the color under the blue paint, or just blocked it out of my mind until I went to choose colors. Strange fate I guess.

I don't know if Cave used it, but I thought this was called "instrument grey" in the day.

Many companies have their version of "instrument grey" usually with an added name to it like "panel" instrument grey. I have not found a paint called instument grey that came close to the color I chose and that ended up being the one Cave used on this scope. I'm just glad the decision is made!

I still have to deal with what I want polished and what will get the wrinkle black. I did discover I will have to mask the letters "ASTROLA" on the mount as I want them to be polished. Is there a "mask" that can be painted on the letters and then be removed later? Or will I just have to cut around all the letters leaving tape.

I just painted the surface of the letters "Astrola" with silver paint and then clearcoated everything. My mount showed no signs that the astrola letters were ever polished.

Hi Tom,
I polished the astrola lettering on mine and then masked with painters tape (which as you said has to be cut). My lettering also showed no signs of ever having been polished before I restored it, but it looked nice

I'm with you Steve. If you spend the kind of time on these things to get them back to practically new, you've earned a little poetic license to add your own special touches. Mine will have the polished letters and polished ends.

The control box for this unit is the common aluminum two part box. Opening it reveals that this unit had a problem. The resister has detached itself from the switch. This design allows for current to be sent to a motor which has two windings. One button causes the motor to run clockwise and the other button uses the second windings, that are wound in the opposite direction, and runs the motor counter clockwise. If both buttons are pressed it allows the current to run into both windings and would probably cause the motor to burn out. Simple but flawed design.

Hi Tom, resto is looking real good. I did not have your email address so I thought I would post the photos you wanted of the hand box here. Mine is virtually the same just black buttons.

Thanks Scott. It confirms that mine had a wire that broke away from the switch. I'm currently looking for switches to go into the box. The ones that came with my box are pretty old, faded, and I don't want them to be unsafe considering the 120v current.

Do you have or could make a wiring diagram of the DEC motor connections? My motor wires were cut off near the motor. I don't want to risk burning out a motor with the wrong wiring.
