You're welcome! Keep in mind that diagram is for the Dec Drive with the Hurst motor. The wiring for the Dec Drive with the Bristol motor is just a little bit different.

The main differences are that the Hurst has 3 wires and the Bristol has 4. The Bristol also uses a resister inline with the capacitor while the Hurst only has a capacitor. I think the same guy who made that diagram also made one for the Bristol motor, but I can't find it in my archives.

Cleaned and polished a few miscellaneous parts tonight. Cleaned the bearing and re-lubricated it. Smooth as silk now.

Thanks Jon. The work you did on your 10" super chrome deluxe was my inspiration.

I can also say, that without this whole group, I think it would be very difficult for anyone to uncover the information needed to do these restorations. You guys hold many many years of classic telescope experience. I appreciate your help. ______ _____

The Finder main cell comes apart by separating the two halves and unscrewing from the inside, a top ring which holds a second ring against the glass. I marked the glass (it already had two red lines) for inside and outside. These are all the components except the glass.

Aircraft remover doing it stuff. Not one plane has made it to my basement.

This is still the rubberized paint as on the focuser. Bugger!

I put 4-5 coats of the paint remover on and it gets down to this. It is almost an anodizing. It has a green tint. It will come off slowly with a wire brush, but I do not deem it necessary as the primer will stick to this just fine. It does not feel like paint anymore, but more like a stain. The picture does not show this very well.

OK, in organizing everything I discovered I might need a bigger table. Looking at it this way, it is a lot of parts. I'm thinking of them in groups or I would be overwhelmed. Now you can see why it is important to bag and label every small part and groups of screws, washers, hex heads and connectors. If you click on "attachment" at the top of this post, it will bring up the larger image in your browser.

Today I am going through all the small parts that need cleaned, paint removed, polished, etc. Here is a ring gear and clutch plate. The teflon (?) split ring is soaking. I am guessing the previous owner who actually used this scope and who did the Light blue paint job, was having a problem with tracking (although this may be a dec gear : )) as the gear was painted blue! Paint in the teeth and just plain gunk. I actually used soap and water first to get rid of all the grease, and then paint remover witha wire brush in the teeth, then Brasso to bring back the shine. Looks nice now and should perform like it was intended.

I pulled the secondary mirror out today. Three setscrews on the side of the barrel removes the main part of the barrel freeing the mirror. Under the mirror was a cotton that fills the void below the mirror a presses the mirror forward to a lip on the barrel. Interesting design. The mirror was covered in dust and I cleaned it with my special optical solution. It is not bad, but shows some spotting that I think will require re-coating. If I do this, I may as well have the primary coated also. But I want to get it together first.

The parts. Notice the small strip of paper to make the mirror fit tighter in the barrel.

Here is a ring gear and the teflon (or plastic) strips that go in the clutch. One is cleaned. Soap and water will not touch the grease soaked strips. I even soaked them for a while. What worked best? GoBeGone. I suppose one could use gasoline or paint thinner, but the GoBeGone worked great and very fast. These are from the DEC and the RA axis and are exactly the same size as the ring gears.

This is the RA worm drive. It is in great shape but shows the years of built up grease and grime. I took it completely apart. The worm itself is held on the shaft with a brass pin that you can tap out with small allen wrench and a hammer. Don't lose it. It is small.

Under the worm was dirt and grime and surprisingly an dirty oily mixture.

I sanded the shaft with 2000 grit sandpaper to get some marring off and to polish it a bit. All together now and used a light 3 & 1 oil on the bearings (brass or bronze). When you give it a spin, it does not stop for about 7-8 seconds!

Note: I used Brasso to clean up the gears and bearings.
