Telescope for Granddaughter
      #5840624 - 05/04/13 07:32 PM Attachment (61 downloads)

I just finished a little scope for my Granddaughter. I told her I would build her a telescope and she held me to it. She told her classmates (2nd grade) about the telescope her Papa was building her and about observing with me and as I understand it some of the kids have accused her of not being truthful (I am putting it nicely). I am hoping this little scope will put the skeptics to rest.

That is a brilliant little scope. Well done, I hope she loves it to pieces.

Tried it out this morning on the moon and I am very pleased. I have two more mirror sets and I may just make one for my self! It was really easy to carry outside. It will get use today observing a boat race. I am in a pirogue building and race with her mother (my daughter)in Lake Charles, LA. Six hours to build the boat and then race it. The Granddaughter can watch her mother race the pirogue with her new telescope!

What size is the scope? Looks like a 4 or 6" F4-5 but its hard to tell frm the pics.

100 mm primary, f7. The focuser has a 2X fixed Barlow. I suspect the primary is not parabolic in fact that is a pretty good bet. Still the image up to 100x , as far as I have pushed it, is surprisingly good. I think 100x is as much as a 2nd grader needs. The mount is very stable, smooth, and easy to move and use. I have several more mirror sets and I may build them up to use at our astronomy club at the school where I teach, they would make good student loaner scopes.

A great thing you built for your granddaughter. And a little design twist that I like.

About a year ago I rebuilt a 6-in f/8 dob from a 40 year old OTA gatering dust. This was for my (now) 5 year old grandson and his father. Very happy feeling when I finished.

The obvious and handy thing about this scope is that you have a handle everywhere to grab a hold of!! Neato! Mike
