UK International Astronomy Show 2013

Hi UK Nexstar CNers,

I hope our moderators will tolerate this post but in view of it relating to another annual reunion of UK Nexstar CNers, I'm hoping they will permit what might possibly be considered an off-forum topic.

Selfishly, I admit: but I merely think that by this means, I might reach all that have already signified their intent to attend the IAS on Saturday the 18th May at the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre, (and perhaps even a few more), and save myself the task of communicating with everyone individually !

This therefore is addressed to the following Nexstar CNers whom I understand will be, or will likely be, at the Show on Saturday 18th May; these being in alphabetical order:

Chris J., Haytor (with son Chad), Mushroom Bill, Old Timer, Peter9, Stevoid, (possibly with Mark and Keith) ?

The doors open at 9:00am but in order to allow all to arrive, may I propose we meet at 11:00am for a handshake and brief chat by the "Star Dome Planetarium" stand, (Stand 50), just to the left of the main entrance ?

In case anyone is unaware, there is a plan of the exhibition layout published in the May edition of the "Sky at Night " magazine. No doubt it can equally be accessed via the "Sky at Night" website.

I hope this meets with your approval and I look forward to meeting up with you guys, some for the first time in which case, I'm sure we'd still have no difficulty whatsoever in recognising each other !

If, however, anyone has an alternative plan, I am of course happy to comply. Otherwise, may I ask you guys to "give it the nod" ?

Best regards and I hope to see you all there !
Tel

I along with my son Chad will be attending, very much looking forward to meeting up with Tel and Andy,(Mushroom bill ) once again, also looking forward to meeting up with all the mentioned CN`ers above that Tel mentioned. This being the first major show in the midlands, to hopefully compete with the London Astrofest, will hopefully be a great success so that it will continue year in year out, it makes perfect sense to me to have such an event in the midlands, as its more central to the entire UK.

BTW Tel.i and Chad will most likely arrive between 9 and 9.30 AM, this event as you know, is quite close to me at about 35 miles away, , so the journey for me will be much easier than traveling to the usual London event.

Regards,

Tom.

Hi Tel,

I will be attending the show as planned. Like Tom and Chad, I will be there a little earlier than 11.00am, hopefully between 09.30 to 10.00am. By this, I hope to avoid the build up of traffic around mid morning.
I will be at stand 50 at the appointed time to meet and greet everyone.

Regards. Peter.

Hi Peter, good to hear you confirm you will be attending the fest, look forward to meeting you at last, i dare say Tel and Andy will arrive earlier than the 11 am time set, for a meet up at the said stand just inside the entrance, but just incase we miss or dont recognise each other, than stand 50 is the ideal place to meet up at the specified time.

best regards,

Tom.

Puts me in mind of the "Rob Wilton" joke. He was telling his wife he'd joined the Home Guard in case Hitler invaded.

"How will you know it's Hitler" she enquired,

"We'll, I've got a tongue in my head haven't I" he replied

Regards. Peter.

P. S. not that I remember Rob Wilton. My mum told me about him

Peter.

Once your Nexstar group checks in, I could move this thread to the Star Party forum where you might get a couple of other CN members from your side of the pond. Let me know.

Hi Steve,

That's very kind of you and a good idea.

Yes, I'd certainly welcome any other CNers joining us for a quick hello, handshake and a chat before naturally dispersing to spend money, and I'm sure I speak for those whom I do know will be there on the day !

May I therefore suggest that you leave the above open on this forum, say, until this Saturday evening and then please transfer it to the further reaching Star Party forum ?

Many thanks and best regards,
Tel

Hi Chris,

You are most welcome and we look forward to meeting you by Stand 50 at 11:00am on Saturday 18th.

As far as your "flexible friend" is concerned though, you can tell your worried "donor for the day" in all honesty, that credit cards are not accepted at the ticket kiosk at the entrance !

(It's absolutely true, it's in the programme) !

Acceptance when inside the door, is, however,........................

It'll be good to see you there !

Best regards,

Many thanks for all responses, guys !

It's a pity we won't be seeing James or Smitty in England this year but we'll no doubt force a pint down while thinking of James and try to provide a few "Astro-snaps" for Smitty to muse over. Thanks you two for your well wishes !

Please note that if anyone does wish to respond further to this thread, it will be moved, as our moderator Steve, (Watermaster) has kindly volunteered to do, (see above), to the Star Party forum as of later today.

Looking forward to seeing y'all there ! (Did I actually say "y'all" ?....... (must be catching) !

Many would say I've already got one, Matt !

For example, a simple "Yes", over here where I live 14 miles south of the city of Oxford: (that seat of unquestionable learning): translates to a poetic,.... "Aaaaarh" !

Never believe therefore, anything you might hear from anyone who claims to speak Oxford English !

Best regards to you and to James !

Hi Folks,

Just to close this one out.

It looks as if those who will be attending the IAS on Saturday will number the following:

Tom, (Haytor) plus Tom's son Chad:
Andy, (Mushroom Bill):
Peter: (Peter 9):
Tony, (Old Timer):
Chris J:(Chris J from Devon):
Chris: (cpl43uk from Bristol):
Myself:

Unfortunately, Stevoid, Mark and Keith whom some of us know after making their acquaintance at the London Astrofest several years running, will not be there on Saturday. They are attending tomorrow.

Have a good time fellahs !

Otherwise, I hope we can all find each other around 11:00am near to Stand 50 just inside the main entrance to the Exhibition Centre.

If it's any aid. I'll be the one wearing the dark blue/black Royal Observatory Greenwich baseball cap with the shape of the Draco constellation on the front, under which will be standing a 5'4", tubby 69 year old !

See you there !

Best regards,
Tel

You do realise you are speaking to a Yorkshire man. There are moths that have been in my wallet for the passed 3 months that have not had a chance to learn to fly yet. I was once arrested for breaking into a 5 pound note.

Wasn't it Liverpudlian comedian, Ken Dodd who once asked whether there were any Yorkshiremen in his theatre audience ?

The response was a hearty "Yes" to which Ken acknowledged,

"Ah Yeah, ..... sitting right at the back again, just in case there's a collection" !

Looking forward to seeing you there, Peter !

Just to add a more serious footnote:

I'm afraid Tony, (Old Timer), will not, after all, be able to join us tomorrow as he had a household accident today which has damaged an eye.

I understand the damage not to be too serious but nevertheless, his vision is obviously impaired and thus restricts his ability to drive for the time being.

I'm sure you'll therefore join me in wishing him the speediest recovery and that hopefully, we'll see him at one or more of future UK "Astrofests".

Get well soon, Tony !

Hi Attendees !

Just a few lines to say that it was. once again, a pleasure today to meet up with some old friends and to make some new ones !

Tom, Chad, Andy and Peter I've known for a number of years now, but it was especially good to make the face to face acquaintance of Chris J, from deepest Dartmoor, and Chris (cpl43uk) from Bris'ol !

It was sad that Tony, (Old Timer), was not able to join us, but perhaps next time: we all wish you well, Tony.

Well, the choice of venue for this, the first International Astronomy Show event proved, in my opinion and I hope in many others too, to have been well selected with plenty of parking (for 2000+ cars) and more room to move around within the exhibition building than unfortunately the London venue has to offer.

As far as purchases are concerned, I hope everyone got what they set out to buy. However, not so in my case.

I had, I thought, logically assessed a need for a one shot colour CCD camera to complement my existing monochrome, but on putting my reasoning to and receiving from, some good advice from Nik Szymanek, I saved myself a little over 1000/$1555 ! Many thanks, Nik !

I did however spend 20/$31 on a Bahtinov mask for my refractor.

Finally, my special thanks to Andy,( Mushroom Bill) for chauffeuring me there and back, and to our resident, (mobile 'phone) photographer, Chad, Tom's, (Haytor's) son, the results of which will no doubt find there way onto this thread in due course !

Once again, many thanks fellahs for a wonderful day out.

Best regards,
Tel

Just got back to deepest Dartmoor (Hound of the Baskervilles locked away for the night). Great to meet all you guys and as Tel said the venue provided a really good central location for us Brits with more space than our usual London Astrofest.

Although Tel saved 980 this morning thanks to Nik's advice when I spoke to Nik later I understand he will be sending out a bill of 700 for professional services

Yep a day to remember.

Great to finally put faces to names today! A real please to meet you all

The venue itself was absolutely fine for the exhibition though I have heard that the lecture room was less than ideal for those at the back. I can't comment myself as I only went to the trade hall. From my point of view the location was more user friendly than astro-fest and the stands were roomier to wander around. I was disappointed in the lack of bookstalls (no Springer) but otherwise a good range. I went looking for a decent wide field eyepiece (ended up with a hyperion 24mm) plus a simple dewheater band for my 8SE. Can't say there were too many show bargins on offer but nice to rummage around the various dealers. I hope they repeat the show next year.

My 280 mile round trip to the show was well worth the effort.

It was great meeting all the U. K members who attended, an indisciplined bunch if ever I met one.

The venue was good and well laid out. Only disappointment was the lack of "show" bargains.

Enjoyed a good day out in the company of friends and look forward to meet all again at next years show.

Regards. Peter.

P.S. Sorry you were unable to attend Tony. Hope to meet you next time.

Peter.

It was a great pleasure to once again meet up with Tel and Andy, also a very great pleasure to meet up with Peter9, Chris J from Dartmoor, and Chris from Bristol, again so sorry that Tony,OLDTIMER, could not make it due to his eye accident at home, but hopefully we can all meet up again next year.

Personally i had a wonderful day, as did my son Chad, and yes a superb venue, which was much more comfortable than the London Astrofest, more space to move around at this new venue in Leamingtom Spa. As others have said, not much if anything in the way of show bargains, but otherwise a great venue which is far easier for many i`m sure to get to.

My own purchases were a upgrade micro focuser for my Skywatcher ED80 refractor, i also purchased a fragment of a meteorite, and to add to that, my son Chad bought me a book which had been personally signed by Chris Lintott at a book signing, the now presenter of the Sky at Night program, not satisified with that, Chad hunted down the other two presenters of the show, Paul Abel, and Pete Lawrence to also sign the book,so my special thanks to Chad.

Sorry but Chads attempts of taking pics with his mobile phone pretty much produced very blurry images that are not worth posting, however there were three that i managed to salvage.

Firstly this image of Chris J from Dartmoor, chatting with Tel.

Secondly a image of myself in the black jacket to the left, to the right and behind me is Chris Lintott doing his book signing.

And finally the meet up of the CN group, sorry its blurred,From left to right, myself,Chris from Bristol,Andy(mushroom Bill),Peter ((Peter9), what were you pointing at Peter. Tel, and last but not least Chris J from Dartmoor.

.

Best regards to all and hope to see you all again at next years event.I will be sure that next time to take a decent camera along,

Tom.

O.K. First and foremost, no one informed me that the "group" picture was about to be taken. Second and second most, someone asked me the where'a'bouts, no name no pack drill, it would be wrong to Tel...sorry, that should be tell.
As I was being helpful and indicating, Chad decided to Flash (naughty Chad) and took the picture, the result of which you can all see. A fine handsome bunch to be sure.

Talking of flashing, did you hear the one about the two old ladies sitting on the park bench. A man stopped in front of them and flashed, full tackle out, and ran off. Apparently one of the old ladies had a stroke, the other wasn't quick enough, but one had a stroke.

Regards. Peter.

Peter
At least you were in focus, I've been pixelated like a criminal, told Chad not to use the ST4 tracking camera

A wise decision Tom. Remember, a coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only one.

Seriously, I know everyone will join me in thanking Chad for taking the pictures. Without his efforts, we would not have any.

(Shifty...I mean Chris, you look quite good "pixelated").

Regards. Peter.

Many thanks Peter,

to quote a famous saying from Black adder.

"I have a cunning plan".............

My grand daughter, Lolly, will receive a new digital camera for her 14th birthday in July, which has a very nice panoramic setting, its a great camera ( i know because i tested it prior to her receiving it).

Lolly, asked if she could come along to our next meet up at next years event, so i agreed, and we will bring that camera along with us.Cunning or what??.

As for Chris, well, what can i say, except that he obviously is not one to keep still while having his photo took, shifty indeed. Perhaps those prison wardens from Dartmoor prison had tracked him down.

BTW, Peter, did you email that chap about those Pods for your observatory??????.

best regards,

Tom.

Chris J,i cannot get over the image Chad took of you at the meet up,you strongly resemble Johnathan Frakes of Star trek the next Generation, or is it just me???,BTW, thats a compliment, it must be the beard that does it!

best regards,

Tom.
