My first Saturn sketches
      #5846714 - 05/07/13 09:54 PM Attachment (23 downloads)

I didn't start sketching until after Saturn's last apparition and had no sketches of this beautiful ringed planet. This afternoon I had a little time and decided to sketch from memory of observations made a few nights ago, using scrap paper and a #2 pencil. My intent was simply to practice and see if I could get it right, then throw the sketches away. When I looked at the sketches I thought they looked pretty decent. I decided to laminate them and include them in my notebook, now regretting that I made them on scrap computer paper. At least I now have something for this awesome planet and look forward to a few more, time permitting.

Thanks for looking.

Ed D

ADDED: Although the sketch notes mags of 160x and 200x I was able to use mags approaching 400x on the night of the 4th. Conditions were awesome that night.

Pete,

Thanks for posting the Saturn template. It is a big help to me to get the planet and rings correct. I used it as a guide in the previous sketch.

Heeyyyy - glad to help!!!! Yeah I drew it freehand

It saves sooooo much bother Ed. It was an already established template but I left the intrusion if too much added graphic for its own good so its nice and blank.

I noticed your Cassinis. Very nice done. Right now only the largest scopes are seeing the division in front if the planet. As a reference to your success here I caught it with my 70mm refractor. It was nice but 1.65 res compared to your .576 res left me with only a couple arcs at the ansae contained well away from the globe. Fun to see in the small scope but not the sprawl like you had through your 8"!

Nice work Ed.

Pete

Very nicely done, Ed. If this is really your first sketch, I'm curious to see your next ones because you clearly have the talent. Keep it up!

Peter

Thanks for all the kind words. Not my first sketch, but my first sketch of Saturn. However, I haven't been sketching that long, starting with a very crude Jupiter in December of 2011. I now have a total of 18 planetary sketches, mostly Jupiter and Mars, and a handful of DSO sketches in my notebook.

Ed,
Very nice work. I like all the detail you have on Saturn. Great Job. May I ask what eyepiece you use on the AT72ED? I have the same scope. It is a nice little piece of equipment.

Ken, my favorite eyepiece for planets is the Agena 7.5mm ED, which is similar (identical?) to the old Celestron X-Cel eyepieces. In the AT I use this eyepiece in combination with my Meade #126 short barlow, which gives me the clearest and sharpest planetary images of all my barlows. To bump up the mags just a little more I will either pull the eyepiece out of the diagonal about 1/2 inch, or use an extension tube between the barlow and eyepiece. I also use the Celestron #94115-A prism diagonal as I find it gives me a sharper planetary image than my dielectric mirror diagonal. I have tried other combinations which work well in the AT, but this particular combo hits the sweet spot for me on the majority of nights.
