WO APO refractor AP 151/800 OTA new
      #5846428 - 05/07/13 07:27 PM

Hi!

Does anyone knows something about this new APO from William Optics?
Since I'm in the market for new 6" APO astrograph this sounds almost to good to be true... I would be extremely interested in it's performance.
It's suppose to be LZOS lens with 4" FT focuser at very fair price (if it is a good performer, of course).

Thanks

Yes, I already contacted TS but then I saw this...
It's nice to have few options, on the other hand it's difficult to choose, but I'm in no hurry.

Knez,

That site only says something about the manufacturer of 1 of the 3 glass elements. Nothing about who actually makes the lens.

In life there is no such thing as a free lunch. Including William Optics. But there is advertising (hype). Lots of it. WO scopes are made to meet a price point , not to be the best in their aperture class. They are priced accordingly.

And you may wish to consider resale value when buying a new scope. You may want a different scope in a few years. I know I had that a few times. In that case a WO is more expensive than the best in class APO-makers who keep their value very well. Anyway, chinese triplets like the TS/OMEGON/SKy Watcher 150/1000 tend to have very good optics. But at (almost) Tak/A-P/TEC prices. You choose

I was discussing the WO Apos' with a retailer a few months ago. He told me that they were made in China, I think by Kumning United Optics Corp. They also make their own brand, the same Apos' as WO but less expensive. I was not aware they used LZOS lenses though but maybe FPL53.

Very pricey! What about the Omegon 150 triplet linked on that page for 3300 pounds less?

Currently, my first option is TS 150mm APO which has same optics but Omegon is CF tube if I'm not mistaken. CF tubes are no good for refractors.

Here are few things I know that might help
1. There weren't very many of this model made, I think I remember it having a Russian design and optics that were touted to be very good, which explains the OK4 glass.
2. The picture shown does not appear to be a 151mm refractor based on the size of the eyepiece shown, and the focuser doesn't look like a FeatherTouch in the picture either
3. Contrary to what many have stated about Long Perng or Kumning, WO doesn't use them for many of their scopes, especially the better scopes. They have OEM relationships with Taiwan companies for machine work in order to meet their specs.

Hope that helps

Timm

Knez,

if you are ready to spend such money, why not to get Thomas Back designed and LZOS made scope for almost same amount ?
150 F8

As pointed above, the WO listing is somehow strange - the pic is different, the scope is listed elsewhere with FPL53 not OK4 element, and is not mentioned on WO page.

6" LZOS from APM is great scope but litle too slow (f/8) for NB AP.

I thought too that picture can't be that scope and as you pointed out scope is not listed on WO site, strange...

I found the FLT151 on another dealer's website here (in Dutch) so it appears to be a legitimate product (but not yet in stock).
This site says it has FPL-53 glass.

Based on info from that site it is really 150/1000 refractor with WO FF/FR IV 0.8x.
So probably same optics like TS 150mm APO...

There's also the WO 123mm f/6 (native) with LZOS lens that you could consider. In stock at TS for 4350.
(please remove that temptation from me)

Personally, I'd be leery of an f/5.3 6-incher. Getting such a fast scope "right" would require a lot of engineering and QC. It's probably LZOS making the lens (the sole source of OK4 glass), but notice how LZOS does not sell 6" triplets this fast under its own brand.

Google 'Andrews Communinations' here in Australia as they have this scope advertised for $9999 , place your order , so it seems they are only just going into production .
Advertised as f/6.7 and a FT 4 inch focuser , tube rings and case .
Optional P-FLAT4 field flattener allowing f/5.36 . Woaw ! .
Brian.

I believe this is the same scope as the TS 150 Apo sold in Europe. However, one can source the TS 6" for about $6500 AU. I think they are both made by Long Perng.

I think you are right there Timps , if I had a spare 6.5k I would definetly look at one , they look nice .
CF , 150mm f/6.7 triplet , FPL-53 1000mm f/l lense , but only a 3 inch LP focuser , but still at $7999 aud , place your order (again) , its still 2 grand down on the WO scope and even a beautiful FT 4 inch focuser aint worth that much .
Lot of scope for little money in today's hi end market .
Brian.
Worth a look

I think if I was going to dump that much money into an APO I would want to be sure I got an apo so it would have the letters TOA on it.

Yes, I don't think the TS would come under the category of "premium apo", and they are so far "unproven". However, this 6" TS apo is half the price of the 6" Tak. That maybe the clincher for some. As you know, I have even considered it myself but the reason why I haven't bought one is because Taks' are renown for their colour correction and quality. I also believe that the Tak quality would be more consistent than the TS scope.
