Does anyone know of a worm gear upgrade for the iOptron iEQ45?

Aeroquest will make one. One was sold in the classifieds last December by a member who said that they were $112 new. Also - there is a post on the ieq45 imaging Yahoo group (message 2216) that quotes iOptron tech support as saying that iOptron will sell upgraded worms for $100 + $10 shipping and handling.

I had the aeroquest worm and the upgraded ioptron worm. Go for the upgraded ioptron one if you are going to do it. The ioptron worm was smoother than the aeroquest and was I think lower in pe if I remember correctly.

Ditto...! iOptron has indicated in an email to me, that the updated worms will be available sometime in June.

Fwiw,

Paul

Thanks to all of you for your answers. I talked to Kevin at iOptron earlier this afternoon and he did indeed say he was waiting on some parts to put the worm upgrade kits together. He indicated they would post availability on their web site when the kits are ready.

Hello from Greece!
I contacted with Kevin too a month ago and had the same answer. I sent him an email again yesterday for an update and he informed me that they have been furnishing and testing better pulleys and belt so there will be another month of delay. Thats cool by me though the better the kit the more we benefit all

What is the raw PE of your mount again? Seems it was astonishingly low and an "upgrade" gear set may be a disappointment.

Hi Stew, the raw PE on my iEQ45/8407 was about 32 arc secs peak to peak, if I remember correctly.

Early on I installed a Telescope Drive Master, which put an end to any PE concerns I may have had.

Regarding the info from iOptron about pulleys and belts in addition to the updated worm, if they go to the 28 tooth pulley and belt currently used on the ZEQ25 mount, it should transform the iEQ45.

The pulley and belt are very fine when compared to the iEQ45 and should immediately smooth out any PE graph.

It will be interesting to see what they finally offer to consumers.

Clear skies,

Paul

Replacing the worm on a iEQ45 requires disassembly of the RA gear housing and just basic mechanical skills.

Any kit would hopefully have installation instructions, and I'm pretty sure there are probably some on the Yahoo Group iOptron Imaging forum.

Cheers,

Paul

Last day of the month but no news from ioptron bout the worm, belt and pulley upgrade. Hope they soon put the package up for sale. I wouldnt like to see a new zeq45 being released before that especially now that i recently bought the ieq45(without the upgrades)

I believe that you have to ask tech support. I did and they asked for a pix of my worm to see if I could use the upgrade. I had a problem at the first step in getting the invisible 1.5 mm allen head set screws out of the pulleys. I sent a pix of the pulleys and they responded that the pix was enough to say that I can use the upgrade. However, they were discouraging about the upgrade and suggested that I try to change the relative position of the RA worm and motor shaft or reassemble the RA driving train first.

To do any of those I need to get the @#$^#@# set screws out. If I ever do, I would just as soon put the better parts in as disassemble and reassemble repeatedly.

Bob
