How I sketch the Moon - a step by step manuel
      #5849343 - 05/09/13 07:29 AM Attachment (22 downloads)

I sketch the Moon for almost three years. Recently I made much progress by using different pastel pencils (instead of only one white pastel), a technic a learned from Erik van Woerkens (see some of his fine sketches here).

He uses:
- white (Conté pastel 1355 n°13)
- light gray (Conté pastel 1355 n°20)
- gray (Conté pastel 1355 n° 33)
- dark gray (Conté pastel 1355 n°42)
- a black pastel, but I prefer Conté Pierre Noire 1710 HB

I made a sketch at home to illustrate the way I work. This is no holy grail. I hope only that you can learn some things from my step by step manuel... and sketch (even) more the Moon

Everything starts with a black paper.

Use your finger (I use my pink) to blend the background.

Make a scan (or a photo): 300 dpi, no sharpening and (if needed) a mirror image. After scanning use a PS-like software to cut the image.

I put my sketch in black/white (my scanner gives it a brownish color I don't like).

Something that makes the sketch looking very good is playing with the curve/graph. First I make the background really black.

This method makes sketching the Moon more easy for me (making the right gray with only a white pastel is time consuming). I'm no artist at all, so I guess using this way of working makes it possible for eveybody (with some patience) to sketch the Moon.

I hope it was worth to poste this manuel and all comments are wellcome.

This is simply excellent. So much time taken to take us through the process. I will come back to this post again and again (and again)...

Many thanks

Jef,

This is a wonderful tutorial on how to complete a lunar sketch. The steps are easy to see and follow.
It makes me want to get out and do it.
Thank you for posting.

Frank
