Buying a Celestron Orange C14 new
      #5852076 - 05/10/13 01:53 PM

I am in the process of purchasing a Celestron Orange C14 from our club.

The telescope was purchased New around 1976 but nobody there now remembers any details.

What can we find out about this scope if I get the serial number?

What would you expect to find out?

All you need to know is that you know from your club that it is a good telescope. Just buy it. It's a privilege to own!

I was thinking that perhaps I can at least verify the manufaturing date.
There are no records available and one members failing memory "seems to remember" it was bought around 1976 ... then he said maybe it was 1983 ...

Anyway I was hoping that with the serial number I can at least clear that up.

Franks its not mint, took a lot of work to refurbish, the scope had mold growing on it, inside it, on the corrector, on the orange Tube, had mud nests everywhere...but it cleaned up nicely with some elbow grease, i added JMI digital setting circles to use my NGC max...its a great combo now with some seriously good optics. I love this scope

Bob, well done !!

Like I said yours looks mint.

Did you have to paint any part(s) of the scope and if so where did you get the paint to match?

I know that on mine there are some issues with the corrector coatings however the inside looks good.

Also the balance bar is there (the one on the bottom) but the counterweights are missing.
I noticed that on yours there are 2 balance bars top + bottom - did you install the other or did the scope come with both?

Should have it by the end of next week I will post some images.

I did not do any painting, its all natural original. There are a few spots that pain is missing on the oTA. The the both bars came with mine. The top bar, u might be able to see it toward the eyepiece end, is a piggyback camera mount attached to that bar. Bob

Very nice! I briefly owned an Orange C14 originally owned by David J of Bubble Nebula fame, but in a moment of insanity sold it...

I own a similar C14 setup and honestly, you don't want to depend on setting it up every time. I would never use mine if I needed to assemble the fork to view. Roll it out on wheels or permanently mount only IMHO.

Hey Bob, I know you've built some serious newts and you've mentioned a few times how much you like the optics on your orange C14. How does the C14 stack up to your dobs?

What kind of $ do you have to give for it?
I understand if you don't want to tell. I am just wondering what they are selling for these days..
they are fantastic scopes. Just like their 8" little Brothers.. Give me an Orange pre 1980 tube over a Black ANY DAY!
Nice....

I have the opportunity to purchase a well restored orange tube C14 to go with my very nice black C8 fork mounted scope or a brand new, computerised Skywatcher 14" GOTO dob for slightly less money.

I don't have a permanent home for whatever I get and it will have to moved around a bit. It would be mainly for visual use with the odd snap of a planet or the Moon.

The heart says one thing but the mind says the other....

Optically its not quite as good on planets as my 16" F6.5, that baby has some sweet optics. And it doesnt compare with the 22.6" for DSO's obviously, but definitely better then the 22.6F4.7 on planets...!!! But what it lacks in those areas it more then makes up with comfort (don't need to climb up and down ladders), with tracking...don't have to keep nudging at high powers like the I do with the dobs. I wheel it out of my Garage and ready to observe. if I had to take it apart I would never use it so much as I do now. With the dig setting circles its a very potent instrument. I thoroughly enjoy this one, and won't ever part with it. bob
