Eyepiece question about the etx90 and future scope
      #5864432 - 05/16/13 12:43 PM

Morning all,
I have looked over several posts and dug around trying to find a good rounded set of eyepieces for my etx90. I have the 26mm and have a 6.4 and 12.4 on order.
I am also hoping to buy a 10" dobson near the end of summer. Taking that into consideration, I curious if there's any other ep's I need to be on the look out for.

thanks,
GT

ps. I am shoestringing this, so money is an object.

I have the AstroTech kit that Astronomics sells... I use it between my Etx-125 and LightBridge. It's a decent budget starter set. The 15MM superwide EP is the best one in the set. At ~$130 for what you get it's not bad deal.

My favorite ep in the etx90 is my Orion sirus 40mm
Cheap and impressive views

The nice thing about the long focal ratio Mak ... it doesn't require expensive "exotic" eyepieces to perform well. The simple and inexpensive Plossl eyepieces are all you will need.

I'd consider a 32mm. or 40mm. Plossl eyepiece to give your scope the widest field possible. Also, I enjoy using a zoom eyepiece with my ETX-125. It's convenient, simple and fun to "dial-in" the exact magnification to match local seeing conditions when viewing the sun (filtered view, of course) and the moon. I use a Zhumell 8-24mm Zoom ($60) which is an amazing eyepiece for the money and has great online reviews:

Zhumell Zoom Eyepiece

Enjoy your Mak and Good Luck with the new 10" Dob ...

Jim

Greetings and welcome to CN.

The 26 SP that comes with it is a good overall EP. From there I would go up to a 32mm for your widest view. The 12.4 is about as high a power I use in my 90ETX. The 6mm is not a good idea as it is too much power in that scope and very small eyerieve. Get a good 2x barlow if you have an exceptional night on the 12.4mm.

After that, my most used EP in that scope is in the 16-20mm range. Meade make a very nice 18mmHD with 60* fov and nice 20* eye relief. Celestron has the same one too...they run &70-80. Also the AT line is a good choice from our sponcer, Astronomics

The ETX 90 and the 10 inch Dob will likely have similar focal lengths. You may want a 2 inch eyepiece for use with the 10 inch Dob to maximize the field of view and this 2 incher will not work in the ETX of course.

For low power wide field in the ETX you want a 1.25 inch 32mm Plossl or a 24mm 68 degree like the panoptic if you can afford it or the ES 24/68 which is impossible to get right now.

For medium and high power I suggest an 11mm ES 82 and a good 2x Barlow.

Thanks for all the information. I'll position a 32mm for the next purchase. Maybe I will find something good and cheap.
The 10" is still in the future, but I am keeping my eyes in craigslist and ebay. I want to look through a used scope before I buy it. I got lucky on the 90 so I am hoping history repeats itself.

For my ETX90 OTA, i normally use the following. I live in NE Wisconsin, (location important for gauging folks eyepiece choice, due to seeing conditions)

32mm Plossl (Televue, old design)

University Optics
16mm Konig (out of production)
12.5mm Orthoscopic
9mm Orthoscopic (poor seeing)
7mm Orthoscopic (good seeing)
If the seeing is REALLY good, a 6mm Orthoscopic.

For a 10" dob, i prefer, other, wider field of view eyepieces.

Ah, so it seems I am on a quest for every changing EPs...Please don't tell my wife. She thinks I am good with what I got last. She might take my toys away if she knew the extent.
