PanStarrs - May 10th in Provence
      #5866716 - 05/17/13 09:44 AM Attachment (27 downloads)

I read somewhere in CloudyNights that the comet PanStarrs was still nice to be seen.
So May 10, 2013, I decided to go on a good observing place, far from all light-pollution, and, this is not so common, a good access to the North horizon.
It was a nice evening with some very amateur astronomers of the Altair83 club of Flassans-sur-Issole.
Antoine, a friend of mine, offers me a full night to observe via it's brand new 12” Dobson F/D 5, with a high quality mirror,…
I spend 2 hours to draw what I saw, allowing my very light pencil travelling on a fine grain paper. It's pretty difficult to be precise about these cometary dusts clouds, but my two sketches are very similar and the image I did, was confirmed in comparison to some pictures taken by photo-amateurs. Trust me, I checked this afterwards and don’t change anything on my sketch. PanStarrs is damn beautiful in a dark sky; the complex tail is artistic and easily visible with the 26mm SWA eyepiece. But more than my eye, I think it's the quality of the mirror that must be put forward here.
That was the first light story of this Dobson with a lovely comet shine.

Michel,

Beautiful sketch of PanSTARRS.
I took a look at the comet when it was near Gamma Cephei last week. Unfortunately, my observation was from a large urban area with a scope similar in size to the 12 inch f/5. Not the great view you have nicely captured. A good sky is essential now to see the comet as you have sketched it.
Well done.

Frank

I thought it had a fan or wedge shape to it when I looked at it on the 13th of this month, but it was much lower in the sky than it was from your location. It still looks like an ascending rocked from a great distance through a tracking telescope. Next time I can get to skies darker than I see at home, I'll go look for PANSTARRS again and see if the wedge shape is more prominent.

Michel.

What a beautiful sight you got. I envy you to have access to a dark site while still visible.

Beautiful sketch you did. Must be so spectacular to see.

Andre.
