My first attempt at astrophotography new
      #5800559 - 04/15/13 01:40 PM

Hello Everyone. This weekend was my first ever attempt with any type of astrophotography. I own a nexstar 8se and used my nikon d80 dslr. I attached it with a standard t adapter directly to the visual back of the scope (no EP or lens). I added a 2x barlow for the close up shot. I know they are not very sharp, but the best I could get it while looking through the viewfinder of the camera. The D80 doesn't have live view option so I can't view through the LCD screen. Next time I will hook up the camera directly to my laptop so I can see the images as they come in on my laptop. Maybe that will help me achieve a sharper focus? I did some post editing on adobe lightroom. Let me know what you all think!

With 2x barlow:

I think that is a very nice start. Do you have a tether program?

I have a free trial of the Nikon Capture Pro software. It allows me to control most aspects of the camera from my laptop.

Take a look at TetherPro. Much cheaper and it works great (except it doesn't support dithering).

I'm not affiliated with Todd, just a user for almost 2 years now doing AP with my D50.

That animation is awesome.

When you open a single image in RegiStax it takes you to the Wavelet tab. Watch this video (skip the first 7.5 minutes) to see what I learned.

There are sliders on the left side of the screen and a grid of buttons on the right side. I only used the first slider on the left side and I didn't slide it all the way to the right like in the video. I only slid it a little. Also, I didn't click the denoise and sharpen buttons 5 times but maybe just 2 or three times. Then I used gamma (from the grid of buttons on the right) but didn't apply as much as in the video. With gamma you can brighten the dark regions more than the bright regions.

Edit: Replaced "the histogram" with "gamma"

In my explanation I said I used histogram when I meant to say gamma. I have edited the original explanation.
