Meade ETX to computer cable new
      #5880342 - 05/23/13 02:06 PM

I'm new around here, so I'm not sure if someone has already asked this, but is it possible to build your own version of the cable used to hook a Meade ETX-70 into a computer for go-to control? I know they are available on Amazon and other places like that for $35-$40, but I was thinking I might try to build one for cheaper, if possible.

Try Mike Weasner's Mighty ETX site, lots of good information. Building cables is covered in the Technical section of the site.

If you are controlling your 70 with the 494 Autostar you need the 506 cable kit. This is because the 494 doesn't have the capacity to interface with RS232 signals. The 506 cable had an integrated RS232 interface. Looking at Amazon it appears that Meade dumped the last of its inventory and they are being sold off cheaply. List on these used to be $50. If you have the 497 Autostar then you just need the 505, which is easy to make. The 505 cable is merely a DE-9 plug wired to a RJ-9 4/4 plug. Building the 506 can be done, but you have to be an electronic enthusiast to do it to save $40.
