Saturn 2013 05 25, drawn in pastel at the eyepiece new
      #5885584 - 05/26/13 01:07 PM Attachment (62 downloads)

Hello all

Here is a drawing I made last night of Saturn.
This morning I cut it out and mounted in my sketch book, the rest was done at the eyepiece.

The seeing was OK, mostly AntIII, later degrading to AntIV. I did however have a couple of brief moments of AntII early on in my session, during which I was treated to a clear view of the white collar around the NPC, and the yellow zone in the North temperate region (which is apparently the remnant of last year's storm).
No details within any belts or zones unfortunately.
I was able to capture the broad Encke minimum in ring A, and three different tones in ring B.

Utterly superb Chris!!!

I just got my mirrors back (recoated) so Im looking forward to a gander to night at Saturn. The polar region is very nicely done. I've wondered for a while if that brighter edge to the A ring on its exterior side (facing the f ring) is not a contrast produced by the dark background but the lighter contrast of that outer edge of the ring that the Encke gap seperates. I posted the query of that possibility in the planetary forum but to no conclusion. It would be interesting that while the gap is invisible the slight albedo on either side of it defines those two different areas regardless.

This is one of your best Chris. Very well done.

Pete

Fantastic Chris, I was out at the same time but had very poor seeing after 11pm. Your new scope is turning out great views.

Chris,

This is a beautiful crisp capture of Saturn showing much fine detail. Exceptional.

Pete, I think that's it, I'm sure someone will confirm or deny, but the Encke gap is found at the outer edge of the Encke minima. You could be right about the outer edge of ring A simply appearing bright because it is seen against the black sky though. it's what makes it fun!

Good luck with your mirrors Pete, I hope they blow your socks off!

thanks for the complements everyone.

Chris, well done. Per Pete's comment, I've not seen the outer A ring as brighter. For me, the inner A ring appears brighter. Nice catch on the polar cap, never seen it that well, either.

I missed Saturn this year. Traveling and away from my scope and clear, steady skies. Upon returning home next week, it'll be rainy season.

It hasn't really come across in the sketch, but the A ring was darker than the B ring.

Chris,
Nice sketch and observing report. You were able to get some nice detail with even poor seeing. The moments of AVII must have proven helpful.

Wow. I just say wow. This view is very, very similar to the one I had last night with a 10" refractor, but no way I can reproduce it like you did.

I suppose you used a template on black paper, right? How do you print it?

Cheers,

Ivano

OK, maybe I got it! Is normal Xerox paper OK for pastels?

Ivano

I use velour paper, normal Xerox paper does not have enough 'tooth' for pastels, that means the powder fills the surface very quickly and if you apply more it falls just off.
You can also use heavier pastel papers, they have rough surface to hold on to more pigment and I think are quite good for the moon with its craggy detail, but for planets I like the softness velour paper provides.

Very good sketch. Now I know beyond any doubt those white regions near the pole are real features and not illusions, I was seeing them through my 15-inch. Last night, I caught a glimpse of them through the 6-inch too, which has excellent optics.
