Windows 8 Tablet - Anyone tried? new
      #5885606 - 05/26/13 01:24 PM

I am curious if anyone tried using a Windows 8 (not Windows 8 RT) tablet to run telescope controls programs (such as PHD Guiding, Starry Night Pro, etc.) If you do, what is your experience?

I am contemplating getting one (there is a deal for $299 from Staples), instead of using a laptop due to its extended battery life and lite weight.

Any thoughts?

There's a windows 8 tablet for $299?!? What are the specs? I run Windows 8 on my laptop and it does all the astronomy software and telescope control (through ascom) beautifully.

We have brought in about a dozen HP ElitePad 900's to our school system, mainly deployed to special needs students.

I did bring one home to evaluate as an astro-companion, and while the screen was beautiful, I found it too difficult to type on, the lack of USB ports frustrating, and the LiveTiles seriously wonky.

Went with an HP3125m instead. Awesome.

YMMV of course

The reason I am considering a Win8 tablet (8-9 hrs) instead of notebook is the battery life. This will make the PHD Guiding a lot simpler.

@obin robinson: Staples has $100 off coupon all Win8 tablets. The Lenovo one is selling for $399 (w/coupon bring down to $299.) It is OOS now so the next up is Asus.

I may have to take a plunge as today is the last day...

Re: battery operating time
It is a myth. One can make a device using a low-end power-efficient processor and going into sleep mode more often.

If the astro applications are CPU demanding and constantly require attention (i.e., cannot go to sleep), then the quoted best-case figure may turn out to be a disappointment.
BTW, USB peripherals, if not active powered, will consume additional battery power from the computer.

(Sure X-day return policy helps.)

There is no free lunch. It's just a reality that is being viewed in a different way.

Clear Skies!

Nexus 10 is already here and I'm thinking of worth it
