Saturn 052413... new
      #5886083 - 05/26/13 07:15 PM Attachment (21 downloads)

Hello Gang,
It's been awhile...
This past Fri. evening was a rare night. Steady and transparent...Views thru the EP was outstanding.

Did manage to image Saturn and really is my best image to date.

I don't know if video taken in Infrared has to do with image being mono-colour...

Thanks for looking,

Regards,
Pete

The IR filter should not render your image mono. Nice capture though. What camera and capture software are you using? How are you processing?

Hi Pete,

Nice to "see" you again !

Firstly, that's a splendid image of Saturn !

Likewise though, I'm slightly puzzled as is James, apparently, with your comments regarding the use of an IR filter. Presumably, this is just an "IR blocker" which one normally attaches when CCD or webcam imaging to reduce the detrimental oversensitivity of these cameras to infra-red radiation ?

If you're saying that the original image, "hot from the camera" was in "mono" then whatever your software capture package, this would not result from the IR filter. Perhaps however, its saturation level might be set too low ?

Presumably, the colour you have thus presented, has been added and enhanced ? (Not that it matters; it is still very well detailed).

I did take a look myself and ran it through P/Shop just to see what might emerge, and I was taken aback somewhat !

You seem to have captured not only the Cassini Division but Encke's too in the outer A ring, (see attached) !

Brilliant ! Let's see more !

Best regards,
Tel

Good Morning James,
Afternoon Tel. Nice to "see" YOU as well...It's nearly tea time...

Thanks, much appreciated...

Did forget to mention that I used the C8 with 2x barlow and DBK21 camera (camera does record in infrared. Also have an infrared block filter). Saturn's video was 2' 30" set @ 15fps. Best 400 of 2250 frames were stacked. So now I'm wondering if not infrared, then recording of Saturn may have been too dim? The settings on the DBK21 are the same as always.

I'll redo the video and check the settings in Registax to make sure that they are set the way I had them at.

The view of Saturn thru the EP was spectacular that evening.

Finally, I can't recall how long ago it's been (I'm talking at least 3 or more yrs ago) after a rain or snow storm, that the skies became crystal clear blue and significantly cooler...I was expecting lake effect clouds to appear, (as they usually do) but we had 3 excellent clear nights instead... BUT Near Full Moon.

Regards,
Pete

This image is not mono-colour. If you look at the histogram you will see that red and green are there but the blue channel is missing. Actually the blue is there but reduced significantly.

Tel, James, WarmWeatherGuy and the rest of the Gang,

Gone ahead and re-post-processed the Saturn avi.

What happened was, that I've forgotten to RGB align and balance in Registax 6. A bit rusty when not imaging on a regular basis.

Thanks again, and enjoy...

Pete

Now I can rest...

You've got it, Pete ! Superb image !

But you're absolutely right: without regular practice, it's so easy to forget the techniques we learn !

Best regards,
Tel

Very nice capture some hints of the ring's shadow on the globe and that red band north of the equator. I've captured some decent avi's last night that I need to process.

Great initial capture Pete. Wonderful processing lads.

Thanks for posting.
