M51 and M13 new

Here are my first tries at M51 and M13. The exposures were about 10 and 7 minutes respectively. Please excuse the dreadful scans - they are scans of prints, and they were made with the bad scanner on my printer. I don't even know how to do computer post-processing! I can't expose for more than 15 minutes from my backyard or else the negative will get completely fogged with the light pollution that plagues most of eastern Massachusetts. I am thinking about trying my red filter with these star clusters and galaxies- it wont work as well as it does with emission nebulae, but I have a book filled with black and white film photos of galaxies, and all were taken with a red filter. Unfortunately, there is still uneven fogging on my negatives; I am thinking that when I stored my bulk roll of film in the freezer after opening it, lots of moisture found its way into the emulsion. I am also entertaining the possibility that it is caused by poor storage after hypering, so I am planning on getting some nitrogen. If all else fails, I still have another 150ft bulk roll about 6 years newer than the one I'm using now.

Clear skies,
Noah

A good start Noah, and that usually means lots of work ahead of us to sort out issues. Considering scans from photos these are pretty good. Keep at it, work things out one issue at a time, but make sure you enjoy what you are doing. It's a great hobby and keeps our minds and hearts active.
