Hi All,

It has been a while since I have posted here. I have been uploading some new sketches to my gallery, but none of them justified a post here in my mind.

My most recent effort last night was of M97, the Owl Nebula. I was not optimistic that I would even be able to see it with my 4" refractor from my red zone backyard. On top of that, it was still late twilight. Nevertheless, with a UHC or OIII filter I could see it quite easily, although I could barely catch any detail beyond ascertaining its position and size. The west edge did seem more diffuse that the east, I tried to represent this in the sketch. I could certainly see no trace of the "eyes". It was invisible to me sans filter.

In the end, a yet another unremarkable sketch by yours truly, but I am quite happy to have glimpsed this one at all. The galaxies in the area, and in Leo, were not readily visible to me on this night.

Ian,
It is a nice low power sketch of M97.

If you invert the image a hint of the nebula is easy to see.

Ian,
Nice capture. I always find it interesting to see what can be seen in light pollution. It's often a challenge but a reward is waiting in finding the object.

A nice sketch, showing how the object looks in a small scope at low power.

LOL, I guess you need averted vision to see the nebula in my sketch!

Actually, I find it shows very well in my monitor with the black background, too well in fact. In the inverted image that Uwe posted I can hardly see it at all.

It was very faint, so I did try to keep it as subtle as possible. Higher magnifications just diluted the feeble light even more and hindered visibility. 37x was optimal.

LOL

Its a great sketch. He even captured its difficulty, the same difficulty I experience.

Sorry guys. On my work computer I can hardly see the details either. It shows up fine on my home laptop, where I do all post-processing on my sketches. I must have the contrast cranked on that computer or something.
