M56
      #5903632 - 06/05/13 10:59 AM Attachment (30 downloads)

I've been absent for some time, I know, partly also because the terrible weather we've had over the past few months. But on Sunday evening, I noticed some stars through the window so I rushed outside. I had already planned to draw M5 for a while because it's one of my favourite globulars with its rather irregular features. But once I had closed the front door behind me, my enthusiasm sank to the bottom of the ocean again because the sky turned out to be completely veiled, apart from... a hole in the CYG-LYR region. Optimistic as I am (ahem... ahem... ) I rolled out the Dob anyway and pointed ad M56 in stead. It's not as bright as M5, it's smaller and much more difficult to resolve, but in the end I was pleased with the result. I hope you are too.

Peter

Peter,
You captured a lot of detail in this faint globular. Beautiful!

I have a sketch of M56 in my sketch gallery. Comparing yours to mine...well, there is no comparison.

Awesome job! I have to say, the extra 14" of aperture sure makes globulars much more difficult to sketch

Amazing sketch.

Many thanks Jim, Ken and Ian! You're so kind, as always. It is indeed a bit of a challenge to draw globulars, although not as much as complex open clusters like the M46 and M35 drawings I made. The trickiest thing I find with globulars, however, is trying to get some 3D in it. It'd be very easy to just put a load of dots where the globular is and leave it at that. I've tried to create different layers of stars and behind the bright front ones I've added a dark circle. When I observe globulars I see the diffraction rings around those stars much better, probably because of the very bright background. I tried to add that effect as well... Anyway, it was a nice practice and one of these I'll still have a go at M5.

Cheers,

Peter

Merci beaucoup, Michel!

I've actually forgotten to tell the best bit! All around me I could see distant flashes of lightning. Really spectacular, whilst at my place there were only cirrus clouds and that one hole around M56!

Peter,

M5 is also my favorite big bright globular with all those stars arching out from the center like a pinwheel.
Your decision to sketch M56 is a great second choice because it resides in a dazzling star field and presents a great look as your sketch reveals.
Well done.

Frank

Super job Peter. Now need to compare with my much poorer version in my gallery. You set a high standard for us all.

Thanks, Chris! But I think that we all set a high standard for eachother. And that is how it should be. Together we push eachother to excel and reach new hights.

Cheers,

Peter

Great work again, Pete. This really demonstrates the value of sketching, particularly for globulars, as opposed to photographs. Photos really burn out the delicate structure of globulars, whereas a really good sketch like this shows the real picture.
