Saturn 3rd June 2013 good seeing :)
      #5904306 - 06/05/13 04:43 PM Attachment (36 downloads)

Hello!

Something amazing has happened, I have observed a planet under good seeing conditions!

Again this drawing was done at the eyepiece, but because of the good seeing I got suckered into concentrating on little details before I had got the over all appearance and colour of Saturn drawn, and as a result the whole thing turned out a bit lop sided and a bit brown. This meant I had to a do a bit of sorting out indoors yesterday.

Rings:
Ring C was easily seen against the dark sky and crossing the disc.
Ring B was easily resolved into three different intensities.
Ring A looked incredibly wide under the conditions, it was a little whiter at its inner edge, and near the outer edge the Encke division was continuously seen, albeit never totally crisp, and just a little bit soft or even grainy looking.

Disc:
In the Southern Hemishpere I noted a bright zone in the middle of the visible area.
The Equatorial zone was bright and clearly showed an Equatorial zone belt with a hard southern edge.
The NEB was more intense at either edge, and did just about show some unevenness in the very best moments, there was also the impression of a very slightly darker area at about L2=19° which could be seen to follow the planet's rotation over the session.
The North Temperate zone appeared dirty yellow,
The polar cap appeared dark grey/brown, with a dirty white collar.
No Hexagon.

Chris,

This is stunning for a Saturn sketch. I especially like the details on the disk and in the rings plus subdued color.
This is how I see it on those rare perfect nights. Sketching it so well is at a whole different level.

Frank

Another great observation Chris, we are getting one or two nights of better seeing at the moment - unusual for the UK !!

Yep, another great one, Chris. Thanks for sharing.

I missed Saturn this season traveling and returning during the wet season.

Hi Chris,

Very fine observation and sketch. You recorded a lot of fine detail.

Best,
