Travelling with the CPC 1100 new
      #5902114 - 06/04/13 04:13 PM

Dear all,

I got a CPC1100 that is in my son place in NYC. And I will take it to Brasil, where I live, by airplane, an international flight. The boxes are huge! It is OK with the tripod box. But I want to fit the OTA in a safer, smaller, metal lugage. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance, Fernando

good luck. I'm not aware of any smaller metal carrier for the case. the only aftermarket protective case that I know of is from JMI and goes for $600 +. many are making due with large tool boxes from Home Depot. Stanley or husky make a 37 gallon container that the 1100 will just fit into, but I don't know if there's enough room for extra padding to make me comfortable on an international flight. I would probably stick with the original box and ship it that way. it was originally shipped in it, so it should be safe. if you do find a smaller safer option, please let us know.

One way to gain a small amount of extra room is to fit the CPC1100 forks diagonally across the container. It won't give a lot of space but could mean that you can get a bit more padding round the scope.

Hi Fernando,

You might want to reconsider.

If you are talking about the original boxes, they were designed for shipping. Part of the reason the boxes are large is so the contents are well protected by the packing materials.

If you transfer the scope to a physically smaller container, there will not be as much packing material and the telescope will not be as well protected.

Perhaps you could find another carrier that would use the original boxes, but ship at a lower cost?

Don
