Cocoon Galaxy Arp 269 or NGC 4490 and NGC 4485
      #5910581 - 06/08/13 11:10 PM Attachment (38 downloads)

Long ago these two spiral galaxies collided and created the irregular shaped forms we see through telescopes today. In the spring and early summer I enjoy looking at these two galaxies when the transparent night sky permits.
They are easy to locate one Moon diameter to the northeast of Beta Canus Venaticorium. Both are reasonably bright and fairly easy to pick out even in light polluted skies. NGC 4490 is visual magnitude 9.8 and NGC 4485 shines less at magnitude 12.5.
Since the view was pretty good, I decided to capture them in a sketch after a long look.

Sketching:
Date and Time: 06-08-2013, 04:30-04:50 UT
Scope: 13.1” f/6 Dobsonian. 21 mm wide field eyepiece 95X
8”x 10” 400 series black Strathmore Artagain paper,
white Conte’pastel pencil, a blending stump, plastic eraser.
Seeing: Pickering 7/10
Transparency: Average 3/5
Temperature: 50°F ( 10°C )

Here is another sketch of another bright galaxy.
M63, the Sunflower Galaxy

There are a handful of bright springtime galaxies that can be reached by modest telescopes in the light polluted south suburbs of Chicago. At approximately 9th magnitude M-63 is one of those galaxies. A spiral galaxy with a bright central bulge of about 4”of arc, this galaxy quickly drops off in brightness where you might hope to see many short spiral arms and knotty dust bands. The spiral arms were not detected at all.
This galaxy is easily located between Cor Caroli in Canes Venatici and Alkaid in Ursa Major. It was discovered 234 years ago this month by Pierre Méchain.

Sketching:

8.5”x11” white duplicating paper; 4B graphite pencil and a blending stump
Scanned and inverted
Scope: 13.1” f/6 Dobsonian: 21 mm widefield eyepiece 95X
Date and Time: 06-4-2013, 04:00-04:30 UT
Temperature: 60 °F (15°C)
Seeing: Pickering 6/10
Transparency: Good 4/5

Ooooo... That lovely couple is one of my all-time favourites! Actually, I wanted to make a drawing of them too the other night, but it turned out they had just disappeared behind my shack so I turned to DRA instead. Wonderful drawings, Frank! I'm sure you spent quite some time behind the eyepiece making them!

Peter

Jef, Peter, Andre and Christopher,

Thank you all for your comments and kind words.
Most of you would not consider looking for galaxies from my yard but every now and then you can actually see something.

Christopher,
Those are two beautiful looking telescopes you have.

Frank

Frank,

Excellent captures. I was doing triplets and more last night with NGC 4270, 4271 and 4281 with NGC 4261 and NGC 4260. Then a few others around the sky. Thanks for sharing, I always enjoy your DSO work (and your other work too).

Frank,
Nice work. Very good detail. 4485 and 4490 are new to me. Fine job on the Sunflower Galaxy.

Nice DEEP SKY sketches Frank,
I'm in white zone and can still see a handful of galaxies with my scope.

This is a neat pair of interacting galaxies, I can plainly see how the smaller one is being distorted by the gravity of the larger galaxy through my own 10-inch Dob. A supernova has taken place in recent years in NGC-4485. A good one for 8 and 10-inch telescopes under good skies. Nice job on the drawing.....

Taras,

Thanks and yes I remember the supernova back about 5 or 6 years.
