2013 Iowa Star Party
      #5911604 - 06/09/13 04:20 PM

11th annual Iowa Star Party is Thursday, August 29th through Monday, September 2nd at the beautiful Whiterock Conservancy, located east of tiny Coon Rapids. This site is located roughly halfway between Omaha and Des Moines, about 30 miles north of I-80.

Whiterock has a dedicated 'Star Field' which offers some of the darker skies I've seen in Midwest 'farming country' east of the Missouri. I should think folks from Chicagoland, St Louis, etc would benefit from the modest drive.

A dinner is provided Saturday, followed by a speaker. Last year's speaker was Dr. Curtis Struck, of Iowa State University, who gave an interesting talk on colliding galaxies.

Here's a nice story from a past ISP at UniverseToday.com... http://www.universetoday.com/73146/5-reasons-to-attend-your-nearest-star-party

Is there a Clear Sky Chart for the site?

Alas, I won't be able to make it. Perhaps next year I'll be free to go.

Unfortunately, the heat/humidity is likely going to be brutal.

It was a good event... I didn't make it out until Friday... Thursday would seem to have been the best night, from what I heard. On Friday, we had about an hour of public star party time early, then clouds... then cleared off between 1 and 3:30am when I got some observing in (everyone but about 4 people went to bed). Saturday night provided another 3 hours or so of good skies, before clouds/storm came through (I actually packed up and drove back to town at about 2am, through the heavy rains). On Friday evening I hit and killed a deer coming down the gravel road to the site. I wasn't about the jam on the brakes driving down gravel, pulling a 1000lb trailer behind my Honda Element. Fortunately there wasn't much damage. The Saturday banquet/speaker were good. It was of course very hot. I cheated by bringing a generator and a fan, which made it pretty comfortable inside the shade of the trailer. Everyone is always very friendly there. Folks who knew OAS member Pat Al-Greene, who has come out several times in past years, were sorry to hear of his passing. It's a nice local star party... the Whiterock Conservancy 'Starfield' is a good viewing site within Iowa.

I intend to go to ASKC's Heart of America Star Party next month.
