Hahahaaa... at last the good weather has returned and so I'm all charged up for another couple of drawing sessions behind my Dob. Yesterday I had a go at this unknown but nevertheless lovely open cluster in Cygnus. The first thing that draws your attention is the cross-like central figure with exactly in its "heart" a bright and very red star. This star actually doesn't belong to the cluster itself but still gives it an even more spectacular appearance. What I also noticed, was a kind of "nebulosity of stars" behind the main structures, which I couldn't resolve. Whether this was due to my imagination (caused by the large number of tiny stars in the core) or whether there are still a lot more (invisible) stars in this cluster I don't know. When I googled some images of this cluster it appears that there are indeed much more stars in that area which seem impossible to distinguish individually at the eyepiece, but which may cause this effect. I hope you like it and that you'll also have a go at this little gem!

Peter

Peter excellent as always. I really like the subtle star field - very realistic and quite hard to get right as there is always a tendency to over egg their brightnesses. This is totally believable as an eyepiece view...

Beautiful, Peter. Are these pencil drawings or electronic? Just curious.

Thank you so much!

@Chris: You're right about the star field. It is trickier than it looks and every drawing is a new challenge, trying to improve over the previous one until I get it exactly right. I'm still not 100% satisfied but I'll get there.

@Christopher: I originally make a pencil drawing and then "improve" it on the pc. You can find a tutorial with some of my tricks on my website.

Peter

Peter,
Another great. Feel like I am looking through your scope in Italy. It's raining here

Such subtle fine detail.
Bravo
Ken

Peter,

This is a perfect open cluster for your fast 18" scope, it looks great in your sketch.

That is a "real" eyepiece view.

Frank
