CGEM azimuth motion rough new
      #5908221 - 06/07/13 03:56 PM

Hi all,
The azimuth motion for polar alignment on my CGEM is very rough, or "jumpy". Is there an easy solution for this? WD-40? Anything recommended/not recommended?

Funny you should ask. Take a look at an ongoing thread here.

Oops! Didn't see that thread! Thanks.

I'll try WD-40, and see if it works. Bicycle chain grease was suggested, so I'll try that next...

I'd first try "Super Lube" available at Harbor Freight or Amazon if you're sure grease is the idea you'd like to try. Honestly, the white plastic "milk jug" is a better idea but the sticky-backed UHMW plastic is much better still, especially if you'll be taking it apart for travel setup.

When the mount is first put onto the tripod, one tightens a screw clamp underneath the tripod to secure the mount. This hand-tightened clamp should be loosened just a little before making azimuth adjustments. On my mount, the azimuth then glides smoothly. Otherwise, the azimuth sticks or moves in spurts. Of course, one has to tighten it again before continuing.

No need to loosen the head when the UHMW material (mentioned above) is used. Honestly, as I previously mentioned, the head can be cranked down hard and the AZ motions are "smooth as butter" once the UHMW material has been installed. It made a night-and-day difference in my CGEM DX and my friend's CGEM.

That's an interesting fix. UHMWPE also performs well in hip replacements, probably for the same reasons- good wear resistance.

Add some super lube. the other thing I found that helped was getting ADM knobs. They're easier to grab... You can also drill the holes out and re-tap them with SAE threads.. And, the 'milk jug' material helps tremendously.

I used slick strips on my CGEM tripod head and it is super smooth now for polar alignment. I detailed the install and linked to the supplier on my little blog HERE.

Take a look at both sliding surfaces and make sure they are smooth. Mine had some paint that needed to be removed and some rough areas that needed sanding. Careful harping too much on tha AZ adjusters cause the thread in the mount can be stipped.

I just cut my own ring out of a piece of 1/16" thick Teflon sheet I had lying around from another project - now the motion is super smooth.

I used the milk jug cut-out as well, with some WD40 squirted on it for good measure. works great now, going on 4 months... no complaints...
