Celestron SLT on Orion Skyview Alt-Az tripod new
      #5893746 - 05/31/13 07:55 AM Attachment (20 downloads)

Celestron SLT on Orion SkyView Alt-Az tripod
Drilled out hole in plate in base of SLT
Used m10 x1.5 hex bolt through plate down into coupler nut
Used coupler nut to tie descending and rising bolts together
Used regular nuts as spacers as needed
Used black 4" PVC, cut to 2" height as spacer/pier
Added PVC to bottom of center rod to tighten spreader
Added bullseye bubble level glued to 1.25 cap placed in accessory tray
Was able to use HC clip on holder on larger legs (1.75") from smaller 1.25"

Added height lets refractor (C80ED) reach zenith. Much steadier, still light enough for grab and go. Will use with C80ED and 127mm Mak.

That's a very nice mod. I have a similar setup with my SLT mounts and the difference in stability is very significant. How does yours handle the weight of the 127 Mak? I have used a C6 SCT and it works, but I worry about the stress on the gearing.

Hi Charlie,

Just out this morning trying it out with shots of Sun and Moon, with the 5" mak. Seems to work just fine. Like you, I would be concerned about the gearing if using much heavier loads. The mak with a camera or/eyepieces is probably all I want to put on it. I've attached a pic of the Moon through a Canon XSi.

Very nice shot. I greatly enjoy lunar and planetary viewing during the day. It always surprises kids at my school to see the moon and planets (and sometimes a star) in broad daylight. Sometimes I think they never look up at the sky even when it's dark.

I think they get used to ceilings and not sky. Ceilings are boring. Sky is infinite. Big leap! We have to do all we can to encourage them. They have to start with the small spaces and slowly open up with confidence.

BTW, I took my modded unit into the field and set up alongside an Air Force bombing range. Pretty primitive conditions. Everything worked perfectly.

The SLT uses the larger driven gear that we used to see on the Nexstar 4 and 114-130 Bird Jones Newts, so the lever arm is a bit longer than that used on the ST80 and LT60. The final output gear is brass/bronze. I think it's probably good for 15# as long as everything is well balanced.

Thanks for that bit of information. It eases my mind a bit on slapping the C6 on the SLT.
