Markarian's Chain
      #5917241 - 06/12/13 03:43 PM

Markarian's Chain. Have wanted to catch this for some time but local conditions not so helpful so headed out to a darker sky site in May.

Not in my usual template style since it was a sketch that occupied two Field of View images. So, the details...

Sketched on 5th May at 23:30 using my Nexstar 8SE and 32mm eyepiece. Conditions were excellent. M84 and M86 were very noticable, as were NGC 4477, 4473 and 4438. The others were less obvious and thank goodness for star charts.I could only see NGC 4413 with averted vision.

A remarkable part of the sky for those of us with modest apertures and less than stunning night sky conditions. I had to pinch myself a couple of times to truly appreciate exactly what I was sketching!!

Sadly the image compressions for the web page have rather dulled the final sketch but hopefully you'll get a sense of the scene. Hope you like.

Now that's a really nice piece and testament to the fact that those XLT coatings are affording good throughput!!!! I did a double take even I saw it was an 8" aperture. You r work is inspiring!

Pete

Chris,
Beautiful work. I always love seeing multiple galaxies in the eyepiece.

Chris,
Excellent! I especially enjoy such 'big picture' renderings which are not confined to just one field of view.

If I might be so bold as to make one suggestion... The fainter stars could be made more point-like. You can create a layer just for those, applying little or no blurring. And while I'm at it. Bright stars can be made up of two or more elements, in separate layers. I make mine with a tight pure white 'core', a moderately blurred intermediate blob, and for the brightest few, a larger, more blurred 'halo'. (When generating charts to illustrate my articles, I generate 4 different renderings of the star field, each layer then being processed differently in Photoshop.)

Pete,
The XLT coatings are not a significant ingredient at all. It's a patient and observant eye. Incidentally, I see most if not all these galaxies--including one or two not captured here--in my home-made 20.8X60 bino.
