Which 3 mounts is best to carry a C9.25HD for LPI
      #5923180 - 06/16/13 02:58 AM

I have a C9.25HD that I orginally bought to use on my DM-6. I have decided to use it for Lunar and Planetary imaging. I want to use a light wt mount and have narrowed my search down to the following three. Celestron AVX(A reboot of the CG-5), Orion Sirius EQ-G, and the Ioptron IEQ30. The C9.25 weighs in at 25lb the way I have it configured, the OTA,Telrad, electric focuser and LPI camera. Which of the three mounts will best do the job. Your opinions would be appreciated. If there is another mount that does not weigh more than the three (mount head and tripod w/o counter wt should be no more than 30-35lb) I have narrowed my search to please feel free to suggest it.

None of these will carry a C9.25 well for AP. I'd look at a CGEM/Atlas/G11.

Difficult question because your three choices are correct answers. Maybe I would go for the IEQ30.

How about choosing a IEQ45 instead IEQ30 for better payload capacity? Now they're in sale.

I rejected those in the 45lb+ capacity range as being to heavy for me to lift with my one good arm. Maybe I am getting to old for this at 70+. I recently sold my G11 for that reason. As far as long exposure AP goes I would use one of my small APOs. The C9.25 would be used for visual and LPI. Imaging times are uaually 1/30 second or less.

According to the manufacturers' web sites, the combined weight of mount and tripod is 35 lbs for the AVX, 43 lbs for the Sirius EQ-G, 26 lbs for the iEQ30, and 36 lbs for the Losmandy GM 8. This does not include counterweights.

Like you, I am load limited. I would like a Losmandy G-11 for its load capacity but it is just too heavy for me. One compromise I have accepted is to separate the head from the tripod for transportation and reattach them every time I set up. I can cope with an iEQ45 this way since the head weighs 25 lbs and the tripod 16.5 lbs.

One mount the Sirius EQG uses that same motors etc. as the much more beefy Atlas. Has ball bearings on both axis. It just has a lighter housing. It weighs 32lb, 43lb if you add in the 11lb counter wt. The other two according to specs have lighter tripods or smaller motors. the 30lb limits on some are optimistic. The Sirius seems to be rated more coservatively. Some weights given for the mounts include counter weights. you have to read between the lines on specs, unless you have already own the specific mount.

Hi misty:

The mounts you listed are light duty for the 9.25 *IF* you want to use them for long exposure AP. BUT ... since you state that you only want to do lunar and planetary imaging, I think that range of mount would be acceptable.

Keep in mind though, that the iEQ45 only weighs 25 pounds, which puts it in the same weight category as the Sirius and CG-5. You'd be getting a substantially more capable mount for the same weight.

I have a very bad back and went for the iEQ45 for exactly this reason. The mount head is really quite easy to manage compared to the competition (CGEM or Atlas). Since the counterweights are always handled separately, they don't enter into the weight comparison.

-Dan

I would argue for an iEQ45 since you stated weight is a concern. The people I know with them really love how light they are compared to the rivals in the same class. And, they have good upgrades to make it fairly competitive.

I wouldn't get any of the lighter mounts. Maybe a GM8, but you'd want to keep in mind that the stock tripod is a bear.

But they will do a good job for either visual or Lunar and Planetary Imaging. My vote is for the VX...best go-to accuracy in the bunch.

What's GOTO have to do with carrying capacity?

Who said it had a dadgum thing to do with it? I was expressing my preference for the VX compared to the other (very similar) mounts.

The only thing that surprises me? Nobody has chimed in yet with the wisdom that only an AP Mach One will do...

Hey only an AP Mach one is worthy of consideration.

Now that that's out of the way, all 3 would be quite serviceable for your stated use. If you think you may go bigger or dual scopes in the future I would go with the G11. If you think you will never need more weight capacity I would go with an Atlas for EQMOD.

Well you all asnwered my questions and I just ordered a VX. I will be here this week. It does come with the new plus HC. Got a ADM wide saddle comming to since all my scopes have them. AS far as buying Mach One for me...never going to happen.
