These guys near Montreal sell them for ~2600$ Canadian http://www.astronomieplus.com/modules.php?name=ProductList&op=BrowseItem&ItemID=1037
Like all the the pro series they do seem a fair bit more expensive than the sum of their (non-pro) parts but perhaps the price is worth it. It does afterall come with a neat Al box!

So it is the same OTA then? I'd love to hear how they are, I guess no one has none yet

I found a review of the Skymax 150 Pro in .pdf format, you can read it here. Has anyone bought one of these scopes yet or had a look through one? I'm seriously thinking about buying one. The best UK price I've found for the OTA is £440 at Sherwoods.

Hey Orpheus, I'm going to call Rother Valley Optics tomorrow to see if they have a finance option for this scope, together with an EQ6 skyscan mount...£1440 all in. I'm pretty sure that the EQ6 will take whatever upgrade I might go for in the future and a 6" Mak for about £400 is too good to pass up! I might wait until just after Xmas in case they have any deals.

I am now a proud owner of a Skywatcher Pro 150 OTA. I have mounted it on my CG5 mount with tubular steel legs and have found this set-up perfectly adequate for visual use. So far I've mainly looked at mars, the moon and some double stars, I've been very impressed with what I have seen so far. I've wanted a really good telescope since being about nine so I'm feeling very happy right now!!

Orpheus you got a scope that should keep you busy observing for the rest of your life! The only problem you face is aperture fever! It's a good looking scope to boot!

Thanks for your kind words Bob. I considered getting a larger scope, like a 10" or 12" Dob, but I wanted something portable that I could set up on my own quite easily. The short tube length of the Mak means I can keep it on its mount all the time and maneuver it through the back door into the garden without having to disassemble it. We get a lot of rain where I live and even when the sky is clear it often doesn't stay that way for long, so it's really handy to be able get my scope in and out quite quickly!!

I have just ordered a Skywatcher 150 PRO MAK 80mm ED. I am the proud owner of a Skywatcher 10" Newton on a Synta EQ6 SkyScan. My idea is to mount the 80mm ED on top of the 10" so I can guide with it or with the 10".
I will use the 150 Pro on the planets and a few M objects.

Hi Simon--
I bought the Orion version of the 150 Mak a couple of months ago, but the image shift in focusing was VERY substantial to the point that I returned the scope and bought a 100ED. I noticed that this was also an observation of the reviewer on Astromart.
What has been your experience with the image shift? Did I just get a lemon? Other than that I really liked the scope.

Hi Phil,
How bad was that image shift you've mentioned?? I'm seriously considering now the EQ6 skyscan + MAK150/1800 from skywatcher now. Is it possible to change the visual back and use some "standard" components from other brands such as micro-focussers and so on???
Regards,
Mert.

Hi Mert--
I didn't take time to accurately measure the image shift, but I would say it was in the neighborhood of 2 to 3 arc minutes. This made focusing very difficult and was, at the very least, really annoying . I talked with the dealer after returning it and he said he checked it out and he also thought it was unacceptable and was going to return the scope to Orion. I still don't know if this is a common problem with the 150 Mak, but I know that my Celestron C5 has no image shift whatsoever and also the Russian Maks sold by ITE do not exhibit any image shift (at least according to ITE).
I understand that you can get a 2" Crayford focuser for SCT's which would eliminate this problem, but am not sure if one is available for the Chinese Maks as the threads on the visual back are different. I've heard that there is a "Large Accessory Ring (LAR)" available that supposedly provides for a 2" VB on a Mak but haven't actually seen one. Maybe someone else out there can comment on this--where you find one and how well they work.
Good luck.
Phil

I have just taken delivery of a Skywatcher Pro 150 mm Mak but have been clouded out since...
However, I have owned several Skywatcher/Orion Maks and found image shift was generally less troublesome than in the ETX Maks, of which I have owned the entire range.
I can say that in terms of construction the Pro 150 is quite a step up from the standard Skywatcher/Orion range.
I had a chance to point the scope at a distant rain soaked tree and there was no evidence of serious image shift...
No chance of assessing image quality though as I’m in the warm and dry behind double-glazing!

Maybe when you get some clear skies, you could do an image shift check for us? I'm still intrigued by this scope but first experience with it makes me wary. If I get some positive feedback I'll probably buy one...but until then !
