Joining the Ranks...
      #5926020 - 06/17/13 05:44 PM Attachment (65 downloads)

It's summer. Fresh start, time to kick back, have fun to do whatever. What does the average 14 year old do during the summer? Facebook, texting, hanging out with his buddies, etc. Nope, not me, I do something totally different from the mainstream. Acquiring a vintage telescope and restoring it to better than new condition, is what I've been up to.

Just before school let out, I recieved a well used Criterion RV-6 Dynascope. Perfect. Just what I've been wanting. I've been getting by the past 2 years observing with my 70mm, begging for larger aperture, and this certainly was the cure! After bringing it in the house, I did a quick inspection to see what needs to be done to it. I quickly decided that I would restore the OTA first, then worry about the mount later. So I wrote up a short list of what needs to be done to it, the order, and what to buy. First off, the scope works fine, and there's no problem optically. It's cosmetically what I'm going to be doing. I decided I didn't want the scope to be restored to factory standards, rather, Built it the way I want, with a lot of the classic looks intermixed.

1.) Needs a new paint job. Instead of choosing the semi-gloss white paint job originally made that way (I think) I chose Rustoleum Vintage White. It's a more yellow color, the same color as Cave Telescope tubes.

Next was just general cleanup of the telescope bits and pieces, like the finder bracket, spider, mirror cell, etc..
The focuser was a real challenge. It was in good working order, but the screws were rusted and just needed a thorough cleaning top to bottom, inside and out. The brass was severely tarnished, and took some extra elbow grease to restore it to it's original state. To remove the tarnish, I took a medium sized bowl, and filled it with a half cup of white vinegar. Then I added the brass pieces, and filled just above the top of them with hot water. Finally a tablespoon of salt was added and let soak for 20 minutes. Following that was a light rubbing with Scotch Brite Pads under warm water, then drying. Turned out great! Sorry, don't have a picture... YET

After that was pretty much just purchasing new fasteners (stainless steel). Man, that stuff is expensive! Much more than I had expected, but whatever, it turned out great so, the tube is done!! Well, for the most part. Still waiting on new nylon thumbscrews for the finder scope to come but other than that, its pretty much it on the tube. Oh yes! one more thing. I went down to the auto part store and purchased some car door trim to go on the edges of the tube, it's like a Sonotube type tube, and I want to preserve the edges from getting roughed up. Man did that make a difference in the overall appearence! Awesome looking.

When the tube was drying, I disassembled the mount and pier assembly. I sanded off the old hammered finish, it had all sorts of nicks, scratches and rust spots. So I sanded it down to bare metal, look at this difference! Before:

And the finished product, complete with the aluminum tripod legs all cleaned up, very happy with the result, by the way, the paint I used was Rustoleum hammered silver. It took some getting used to, to get the texture just right, by holding the can closer or farther from the metal

So now the only thing I have left to do is to clean up the mount head, make certain the motor drive is working the way it should (I know it works and tracks, but I want to make sure it isn't slipping or something). But for next couple of weeks, I'm going to relax and enjoy my hard work. Here's the final pictures:

Young man you have done an awesome job!! It looks outstanding. You certainly should be proud of yourself. I wish you many years of wonderful observing through your "NEW" Classic RV6!! A big welcome to CN , and I for one can not wait to see the finished product. I have an older RV6 just waiting to be refurbished...you have given me incentive and some good ideas. Thanks for sharing. Nice to hear from a Justin B. with brains and common sense. Too bad you don't live across the street from me. You've done an excellent job there with that RV. I too am not a big fan of the pure white color. When I redid one of my scopes I used ACE appliance white epoxy....kind of a bone white just like the original color was. Mike

Justin-Your RV-6 is looking good. I bought mine in 1968 and still use it. One thing, make sure your mirror clips do not hold the mirror too tightly. The mirror should actually be free to move in the cell. (Clips positioned a tiny bit above the mirror surface). Tight clips can cause astigmatism in your otherwise very nice mirror.

I also had a lot of trouble getting my secondary mirror collimated until I added a spring on the center bolt to provide tension/compression. Maybe the RV's came with springs originally, but mine did not have one. The spring goes between the secondary holder and the disk that has the tilt adjustment screws.

speaking of that, I had a great collimation the other day, and as the night progressed, the collimation for the secondary slowly came undone. Good thing I have one extra spring left! thanks for the advice!

Yes, outstanding job! Now all that remains is be out standing, using it under the stars!

The RV-6 was my dreamscope when your age- but nothing quite like it was realized until well into my next decade... so by my middle-aged reckoning, you're waay ahead of the curve!... and in a whole buncha ways, too.

You've done an exceptional job restoring that RV-6, Justin; with that kind of attitude and "can-do" spirit you'll go far in life! One word of advice: no matter what the future brings, hold on to that scope... even if in days to come you have to store it away for a time due to other commitments, or because you feel you'll never be interested in it again. This instrument, and your restoration of it, is a waypoint in your young life; when you are older, it will provide you with many opportunities for happy reflections (no pun intended).

I wish you many pleasant hours at the eyepiece of your new-yet-old instrument, Justin, and a lifetime full of clear, starry nights!

Fred

P.S. Folks, the next time someone on CN starts to bemoan a perceived lack of young folks who are seriously interested in amateur astronomy, I intend to provide them with a friendly link to this thread.

Justin:

You have done a wonderful job with the RV-6. This is the story behind those focuser knobs:

The original focuser shaft was badly bent. A machinist friend drilled out the old shaft, saving the gear so it could be reused. He machined a new shaft along with the knobs. The shaft and the knobs are stainless steel. The gear was then brazed to the shaft, I believe with silver.

One Christmas he wanted to give his wife a telescope ...

These beautiful old scopes, we are not owners, we are caretakers.

Jon

I did something very similar at your age. Many years on, I'll never forget the satisfaction and the sense of adventure I had from rebuilding an old scope and the views I was rewarded by. You've got yourself a life experience right there. You're way ahead of your years. Well done mate.

Well-done, young man!

When I was your age (1972), I was making my first molded fiberglass tube in my dad's garage. 10" diameter, for an 8" f/7 Newtonian. I checked-out Neil E. Howard's "Standard Handbook" from the public library and followed his method. Worked pretty well!

That was my first experience with composites. Of course, I reasoned while mixing my resin, ignoring Howard's advice, "if ten drops of catalyst is good, half the bottle would be even better!"

Good thing the resin bucket was near the open garage door and I could kick it out in the alley before the flames got too bad. Lesson learned!

Nice job, dude. I think it's great when the next generation starts to enter the hobby.

A couple of questions - how are the coatings? Does the drive work? I have an old clutch assy and worm gear - they are yours if needed. If you need help with that, let me know.

I used to build RV-6's back at the plant in the late 70's. Small world, huh?

If the scope is losing collimation, it's probably the primary moving in it's cell.

Fabulous restoration, Justin! You would love to read the thread about how Datapanic restored the trashed, rusted remains of a Cave found in a field while horseback riding. Soon enough, you'll be working such magic! It's among the longest threads on Cloudy Nights, but guaranteed a real thriller page-turner!

Me? I'm a mere wannabe, currently with limited skills, but always learning, so I'm in awe of your prowess. When I bought a salt-encrusted C8, it proved to be beyond my ability, so I sent it to Larry Beach (Orion61 in the post above) to refurbish. It's sitting in the post office now, waiting for me to rescue it and see his handywork!

I had to get rid of a lot of stuff just to have space for the scope, so, probably next, find some more space. I had thought about doing a 10 inch reflector, f-4.5 +. That would be great. There's a couple of old starfinders in the classIfieds right now, that's what I want, the GEM version. But that's for later on, I want to enjoy the RV-6

Justin, welcome to our fold and might I say what a fantastic job you did on that RV-6. I have one myself and they are great scopes. It should give you plenty to look at for some time and has very good optics. Try to find you a Philips SPC900NC webcam and really have some moon/planet imaging fun you can show off to your friends/family.

Again well done!!

Wow Justin - great job indeed. I know how much fun that was. What a way to kick-off your summer of 2013.

I really love that upgraded focus knob. You sure can get some fine focus with those big wheels.

You'll be enjoying that RV6 all summer long. I bet some of your friends will be so amazed by what they see with your classic telescope that they'll probably want one of their own. Have fun.

Your blog wasa good read, you definitely have a passion young man! Jean Texerau's atm book is great too, includes how to for alt az mount+tripod for 8" f/6 newt project and a 10" classical cassegrain. When you get a hankering down the line, save the linky for internet teleport:

Well, the nylon thumbscrews came in the mail this morning and I was eager to try them out with the original finder scope. It looks pretty good, and best of all, the paint should stay in nice condition! I haven't repainted the brand name yet, just one more thing on the checklist, but soon enough

My first time out with the RV-6 was on the 18th of June, also my longest observing session ever! Here's a sketch of M8 (Lagoon Nebula) at 46x with UHC filter:

Wow... You refurbish a classic scope, consider buying another, and then *sketch* (!) with the one you have! Justin, you are a one-man resurgence in classical visual astronomy!

Something to ponder: If, in the local classifieds, you happen upon a good deal for the 10" f/4.5 you want to refurbish next, consider buying it while it happens to be available. This may be a terrible idea, promoting pack-rat-ism (as it might be for me), or an excellent idea, leveraging foresight to buy something you're sure you want (if you are), rather than find later that it is no longer available so close to home, for the right price, when you happen to be ready to work on it. Don't rush and jump. Buying ahead allows you to buy slowly, to ponder and choose carefully, without having to rush when you are ready to work.

Thank you for your words of encouragement. One reason I'm a wanabee is lack of a workshop, something I want to have, and hope to have after I move, which will be soon. Then, there is a certain Tasco 7te-5 refractor with an optical tube in fine condition, but a mount that needs to be wholly disassembled and re-greased. The salt-encrusted C8 was another story. It turned out to be so corroded together that it was smarter to send it to an expert. How Larry removed the ring holding the corrector plate without shattering the glass I'll never know, even though he described it well and posted pictures. With a Schmidt-Cassegrain, if you shatter the corrector, it's game over. In Newtonian, one might lament the loss of an original mirror, but it could be replaced with a new one, and the scope would still work. Sometimes, it's best to turn jobs over to experienced hands.
