M17 Swan Nebula Real-Time HD Video thru IIE new
      #5918076 - 06/13/13 12:50 AM Attachment (40 downloads)

Here's the Swan Nebula as seen by a Gen 3 image intensifier connected to a Mewlon 250 scope at f9.2. Got a 12nm H-alpha filter in the mix. Camera is once again the Panasonic GH3. Shooting location is Mount Pinos, Calif.

M17 Nebula Real-Time Video Link

Here's a 2.5 sec exposure still to get you started:

Excellent as always - you've perfected the EOD+video technique and another strand to "augmented viewing" - well done

I second that. You have definitely taken the GH3 and Image Intensifier to the next level. Still wouldn't mind seeing a stacked B&W image though. Do you have a tracking mount? Is it guided?

Thanks. Yes, my mount is an AP 900GTO mount. I don't have an autoguider, but with simple polar alignment, I should be good for a least a couple minutes of tight tracking, which is plenty enough when using an IIE.

I haven't had a chance to play with image stacking yet.

I did experiment briefly with the GH3's HDR the other night, but I saw little benefit while shooting a galaxy with my IIE. Need to fiddle with HDR again.

The HDR mode works best on the objects with massive amounts of DR. It has worked well for me with the Horse Head and Orion's Nebula. There are some summer objects that I would like to try. However, we have high humidity for the next 3 months so observing is out for me for quite a while.

Absolutely brilliant results again Jay! Top stuff mate.

I like your pinpoint stars and the amount of Nebula you capture at only 2.5 seconds.

You are building up a very good collection on your site
