3 eyepieces that show off a Tak 120? new
      #5925759 - 06/17/13 03:21 PM

Hi, what 3 eyepieces would you suggest that best introduce a guy to the new world of refractors? In particular a TAK 120? I have a few celestron plossls and a Baader zoom but I'm guessing all of these are on the narrow side?

Oh and I'm going to be using a manual alt as mount.

Lastly, go gentle on my wallet please

I have a 120MM EON and the Most used EPs are:
20MM ES 100*
9MM ES 100*

and for those really good seeing nights

3.5MM Nagler T6

If the 3.5MM Nagler is too much, I would recommend a 5-6MM Nagler or ES. I really want the 5.5MM ES100* but its not out.

not much is better than the Tak LE series for sharpness but:
1) not easy on your wallet
2) on the "narrow side"

I would strongly recommend that you save up and get at least 1 high power LE.

5mm Pentax XO (this has no alternates )
10mm Ethos (alt - 9mm ES100)
21mm Ethos (alt - 20mm ES100)

In my EON 120 I really like the Pentax XWs - 10, 7 and 5 mm. The 7 mm being my most used. I love the color produced by these eyepieces. Then the ES 14 100mm, ES 24 82 mm and ES 34 68 mm for wider views. I never used a Pentax XO, but if Bill say the 5 mm is tops, then I would check it out.

So I would probably say the Pentax XW 7mm 70, the ES 14mm 100 and the ES 24mm 82.

5 & 7mm XWs. 13 Ethos. 31T5 Nagler.

OK that's 4 but hey... happy, happy, happy.

Oh and the 3-6 Nagler zoom.

That's very close to where I would be heading. I own all of these eyepieces and they are excellent. That having been said I prefer to use my 14mm Pentax XW to my 13mm ETHOS, due to its greater eye relief and comfort when viewing with glasses on. If you don't wear glasses the 13mm ETHOS is a great choice.

I just don't think 3 eyepieces is enough for a non specialist observer under general use. Particularly with a $4, 000 plus refractor. No point buying a wonderful telescope then coming up short on eyepieces for the sake of an extra $300 to $400.

The only change I would make from a personal point of view is to swap out the 13mm ETHOS to something with longer eye relief like the 14mm DELOS or 14mm Denkmeir.

Cheers

Of my 3 EPs, the one most used so far in my 120mm refractor is the ES 11mm 82*, followed by the TV 6mm Delos, and then ES 20mm 100*. I really love the view through the 20mm because when I look through it, I feel like I'm stepping into space itself. It's not used more because the things I'm looking at right now, such as binaries and dim fuzzies, require a higher magnification. But when there are a number of objects bunched together, such as near Sagittarius, I pull out the 20mm.

Thinking of getting something between the 6mm and the 11mm, however. Perhaps an ES 9mm 100*, or ES 8.8mm 82*.

TV 3-6 zoom...the 120 will rock on planets/lunar/doubles...then two more wide-fields of your choosing. But, you will spend most of your time with the TV.

I think you have the bases well covered! You have a nice spread of magnifications with mega wide fields and the ability to zoom to your seeing conditions for the upper end. Report back with your impressions.

Excellent!! Don't forget a 2" Barlow for some wide-field high powers too. Maybe a 1.6x Antares?
