Denk standard on Lunt 100mm Ha
      #5929134 - 06/19/13 12:31 PM

Hi,
I have a Denk standard bino and I got the solar kit from Russ too. But with my TV Plossl 15mm pair, I cannot achieve focus on my Lunt 100mm Ha. Do you know what I can do to achieve focus? Do I need to use different pair of eyepieces?
Many thanks,
Cheng

Hey Cheng,
My best advice would be to call Russ at Denkmeier.
But if you can tell us what parts you have and more importantly how (in what order) you have them going together in the optical chain we may be able to help you get to Solar Nirvana.
Your 15's should not be an issue at all unless your just not getting the sun aligned into the Feild of View.

I use the Denk Standard, Denk OCS for Lunt scopes, and 15mm TV Plossls. They work fine, and put up a very nice view on my Lunt 60.

Something must not be set up correctly on your scope. As Jeffrey said above, we need more info.

Jeffrey and Bob,
Thanks for looking into this.
I think I finally figured out what's going on. On Denk's website about the solar kit, it mentioned that the kit was for Lunt 60THa but Russ said that it will work for Lunt 100Tha too. It does work but it needs a lot of out-travel to reach focus. I should have thought about this before. Even in mono-view mode with my Pentax XF 6.5-19.5mm zoom, I had to take the B1800 diagonal out to about the half way point of the nosepiece in order to reach focus. I was finally able to reach focus with a pair of TV 25mm Plossls using 3X power switch mode and again I had take the diagonal out. The current nosepiece kit with the denk OCS is not long enough for me to reach focus using 1.3x/2.3x mode. But at least I can binoview the sun with 8mm equivalent and that is actually pretty close to optimal anyway.
Cheers,
Cheng

Also, here is my setup. When I was able to reach focus, the nosepiece assembly wit the OCS is about half way out.

Glad you could obtain a view.
I would still put a call into Russ at Denkmeier, and I'm not personally familiar with the Lunt Diagonal, but if you can get the OCS to thread onto the diagonal body then the short barrel, I think you'd be in even better shape. You can also thread the OCS onto the very end of the barrel and get a different result as well. Just a couple things to try anyway.
Good luck, and keep us posted with your findings as they may be helpful to others in the future.
Jeffrey G.

Your B1800 diagonal and OCS is set up correctly. Lunt advises all users that the diagonal has to be pulled out about half way as the first step in focusing. You then use the focuser.

I have 2" extension tubes that I use on my refractors. They are 80mm, 50mm and 35mm in length. The 35mm length 2" extension tube from OPT works perfectly for my Lunt 60. This eliminates the need to pull the diagonal out of the focuser.

Russ just dropped me a line. For the lower power mode, I need to get more in-focus travel instead of out-focus travel. So I was going at the wrong direction after gaining focus at 3x mode.

Bob,
That's a great suggestion. I will give it a try next time I use bino.
Thanks,
Cheng

Finally I was able to reach focus with all 3 settings of the power switch using a pair of 25mm TV plossl.
1.3x - needs to pull the diagonal out half way
2.3x - needs to use 2" extension tube but with diagonal all the way in
3x - need to use 2" extension tube and pull the diagonal out a bit

Some eyepiece may also have to be pulled out a little to get more out focus length to focus.
