If I see this on the screen door, I know there is something in the dining room/kitchen.

I have been wanting to try out some of the RKE eyepieces. I have also wanted to try out an Astroscan but I keep pulling my bids short on eBay at $200 and change and losing to more committed buyers. They look so little and cheesy in the photos. So I went for this ala shopgoodwill auction, for just the eyepieces.

And I got it. I knew there was something loose inside the body of the telescope. I was hoping it would be some little plastic focuser part. I imagined spending hours fishing in back out through the focuser and saving the day. Goodwill said something came unglued inside. I could relate to that, happens occasionally

I have never seen an astroscan, didn't know about the weights!

One of the best packing jobs from Goodwill. I have had things arrive with the wood box as the outside packing, which in some ways might get a bit more respect from the UPSFEDEXDHL folks.

So the weights... around the primary... maybe 2#? apparently come as two semi-circles. What would you think happens when one comes unglued?

At this point I need to remind myself that I bought this for the eyepieces. I kinda like this little beat up sweetie! Even matches my car...

So the corrector and the primary are beat to ****. But I bought it for the eyepieces.

Apparently whatever happened to this telescope happened very early in its life. The eyepieces are...

Which is what i was bidding on but having met this unused but abused by nothing more than bad glue I'm quite sad. Is there a way I can remove the corrector plate re-glue the weight and see if it works? I would have imagined with the heavy tube weight piece banging around on the trip north that the secondary would be damaged but a look through with the 15mm ep at distant trees was bright and sharp.

Anyone have a safe way to remove and replace the corrector w/out wrecking the collimation? Not that I have a lot to lose here.

Johann, maybe! I would like to save this one but...

hardly vintage by my standards, but I've heard both wonderful and terrible things about this telescope. Actually holding one makes me think there is some observing to be done with them. If I can remove the weight set from the tube

You need split ring pliers to remove the window. Look down ar the window and you will see the split ring. You can get the pliers at Sears. Do not attempt to remove it without proper tools. The mirror is held in the same way.

Ain't that an optical window and not a corrector? How's the primary?

Thank you J.

Split ring pliers it is... I call them keeper removers. But don't have any that spread this wide. Sears it is!
