Crater Hipparchus and the history of moonsketching
      #5933248 - 06/21/13 04:00 PM Attachment (22 downloads)

Hipparchus is number 28 in the Lunar 100. This list of interesting moonobjects (rather than beautiful) was made by Charles Wood. Hipparchus is "subject of first drawing of a single crater". Wood is refering to a sketch from 1664 of Robert Hooke (made with a 30 ft focal length telescope!). In the first years of moonsketching most drawing were of the entire moon. But I guess Wood is refering rather to a "first drawing of a RECOGNIZABLE crater". Galileo Galilei made already in 1609 a sketch of a single crater. But it is impossible to say which feature it is.

Jef,

This is very fine sketching by you and the sketch by Robert Hooke those many years ago nice as well.
This is also a nice side by side of two different media approaches to sketching.
Fine post Jef

Frank

Thanks guys!
Interesting: Hooke sketched a crater south of Halley where there's no crater at all.

Oh, how wonderful, Jef! Seems that the moon hasn't changed much over the past 350 years. Superb drawing, by the way and very interesting too.

Peter
