How much heavier is a CG5 mount to a CG4?
      #5936455 - 06/23/13 01:59 PM

I have an Orion Express 80 that I use on my CG-4. I haven't had much time with this rig but I really like the combination for my grab and go. I picked up the CG-4 very inexpensive ($125.00) so its economical as well. What isn't economical is adding DSCs, which I would like to do. They are getting to the point that for most mounts why bother, its a better deal to but buy a used Goto Mount.

I see that since the Celestron VX came out that Cg-5's are going cheap. I just saw an add in the classifieds for a CG-5 for $325! SO I am considering this.

How much heavier is a CG-5 compared to a CG-4? Does anyone use a CG-5 for a grab and go?

3-4 pounds. The CG-5 head alone weighs 13#. Goto adds a pound. The standard CW is 5Kg. (11#) and the shaft a pound, the same as the CG-4. Tripod is about 20#. For G&G I use a Vixen SP hub and wood legged tripod or a HAL130/160.

price is about right as he is not including shipping. i snagged mine off CNC a few months ago for 400 shipped.

new ones are selling for 550 on the internet so used values have to go down on them.

Yep! For either my 80mm or my C8 SCT. Quick set-up, quite portable (by car), excellent GoTos and tracking. Having said that, both of my CG5ASGTs had to get warranty serviced. One twice, the other once shortly after purchase. Since Celestron repaired them they've worked flawlessly. I do highly recommend the ADM CG5 Saddle Adapter.

Fred1, can I ask what the warranty issues were? I have an 8 year old ASGT and have only had to do the power switch fix.
