Saturn and Enceladus new
      #5936434 - 06/23/13 01:49 PM Attachment (74 downloads)

I have not sketched Saturn this go around because of extremely poor weather so far this year. On Wednesday evening the atmosphere cooperated and I had a scope outside cooling down. I did not have access to any Saturn templates because of a computer crash I have not yet been able to repair. So I took out my old mechanical drawing equipment and made an ellipse of the approximate eccentricity of Saturn’s rings and sketched from there. It’s a bit crude but reasonably close to the view. Seeing was good and the atmosphere was transparent. I was able to see Mimas but it was just beyond the way I framed the sketch for posting. Enceladus was about 12th magnitude.

Sketching:

Date: 06/20/2013, 01:45 – 02:45 UT
Sky Conditions: Partly cloudy
Transparency: 3/5
Seeing: Pickering 7/10

For sketching I used 10” x 12” Canson black paper, white, gray, charcoal and black pastel pencils, powdered Conte’ crayons, white Pearl eraser, blending stumps.

Equipment: 18” f/4.95 Dobsonian with a 9mm ortho eyepiece for 250 x.
Neodymium filter and single polarizing filter

Frank

Frank,
Fine work. I was looking Friday night at a local star party. We had hazy skies but it still looked good. You got a great deal of detail. Nice work.

Woah Frank. This is really nice. I like so much when a moon or two are figuring with the main planet. So nice.

Andre.

Ken, Andre, and Tom,

Thanks so much for your comments.
Saturn is a tough sketching target, beautiful to look at but problematic to capture faithfully.

I find Saturn sketches without template always more personal. Fine work!

Great Saturn, its very difficult to get right without a template, you did a great job, lots of detail and banding, superb.

Jef and Tommy,

Thank you.

Andre,

If I sketched Saturn often,I would use ring templates.
I don't see the colors on Jupiter or Saturn that I can easily see on Mars.
I really enjoy seeing those color Saturn sketches by others.

Aaaahhhh see the difference aperture makes lol.

Great work Frank!!!! I particularly like the temperate belts a s the one bisect ing the EZ. In better seeing Ive glimpsed the thin one that bisects that zone with my 8". So far I haven't had good enough seeing to make a call on it.

Very nice work and good catch picking out Enceladus!

Pete

Taking a break from the moon, Frank? Get back to it before you show me up on Saturn. Ooops, already did.

Nice to see you out observing the planets, too. Well done.

Frank,

Aperture matters. So does eye, hand and pencil. Bravo.

Lovely sketch, and,... As said here before, without template the result is maybe more artistic. A good ASOD day !

Very nice drawing, Frank! Perhaps it could still use a touch of colour, like you do so well with your moon drawings? Well done!

Peter
