Our club just tonight started a Facebook page. I was hoping that some of you are in clubs with successful Facebook presences and could offer a few suggestions on which way to take this. My idea was the standard PSA type stuff about celestial events and notifications about club outings and public nights at our observatory. Then using those to comment on the pages of local news and educational organizations to get the word out. Any other fun ideas you wouldn't mind sharing? I'd also love links to your club's pages so I could poke around too. I'll "like" them, I promise.

Clear skies,
Rock

Here is a link to our club's facebook page as an example:

We post about astronomy news as well as observing nights, club activities, club astrophoto's etc...

I love the trivia question idea. I think I'd like to try something like it on our page.

I am extremely glad that I started a Facebook page for our observatory. Not only is it an easy way to keep people up to date, it is currently providing a bit of stability for us. Our University is switching websites and there's going to be a transition period in which the new site will be a bit bare. Thanks to Facebook, it's less of an issue. I have the Facebook page tied in to our Twitter account so that Facebook posts directly feed into it - very handy.

Here's the Bridgewater State University Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bridgewater-State-University-Observatory/18813... .

We use a telephone hotline to convey event cancellations for those who don't use Facebook or Twitter, as well.

I know our club has a very active facebook page, but to be truthful, I never set up a facebook account, and truthfully, don't care too. Just not into all that techie stuff, preferring the quiet, undisturbed life...

Have no problems with forums like this, or attending meetings, star parties, etc....Just not a facebook person...or twitter for that matter. Can't wait for my smart phone contract to expire so I can smash the Win8 phone and get a "dumb phone", the kind that rings and you can answer it without going thru a swipe, punch, punch, punch just to answer the phone!!

Here is the page for the Forsyth Astronomical Society. You should also look at using Google+ we have a page there also. The benefits with it are being able to control more of what is posted and what you see. Plus the Google Hangouts feature is something we're going to be looking at using to do simulcasts of our club programs. I personally prefer G+ over FB but it doesn't have as many users. I suspect that will change the more FB pursues it's commercial revenue streams. I think people will be bailing once they get a full does of intrusive advertising every time the log on.

I agree personally - it is easy to get frustrated over Facebook's attempts to nickel and dime you. The "boost post" button irritates me. However, so far the service itself is free.

The problem with G+ is that a lot of people aren't computer literate enough to feel the need to have a Google account. G+ is to Facebook as Firefox is to Internet Explorer. I do like the suggestion, though, and may branch out to G+ as well.

A colleague of mine suggested creating a Wiki page for our observatory. While versatile, I don't feel that it will find the audience that the social media websites do.
