M85 - A Lenticular Galaxy in Coma Berenices new
      #5940720 - 06/26/13 12:17 AM

This field of view shows the large lenticular galaxy M85, the spiral galaxy NGC 4394 (left of M85) and the dwarf lenticular galaxy IC 3292 to the right of M85. While lenticular galaxies aren't the most exciting of targets, this one holds a little something extra - close inspection of the high resolution image will reveal that most of the "stars" in and around M85 are actually its globular clusters!

High Resolution version and more image details available at http://www.astronomersdoitinthedark.com/index.php?c=113&p=500

This image was made from a stack of 115 x 5 minute subs (about 9 1/2 hours) at ISO 1600 taken with an orange tube Celestron C-8 at 1160mm (f/5.8) and a Gary Honis modified (Baader mod) Canon 450D. Guiding was with an ONAG On-axis guider, Lodestar autoguider, and Phd Guiding.

Thanks for looking!

Might not be a wallhanger Scott, but it's better than most M85's imaged with a Dslr. 115 x 5 minutes? I give you credit for the patience acquiring, and processing data like that.

Thanks for sharing,

Paul

Very nice, that is a lot of integration. I think I'm up to 4,5 hours as the longest time on any image.
Do you stack all 115 subs/darks at the same time?

Now...that's deep!

Long integration time surelly pays off, do you have a permanently mounted detup Scott?

Greets,

Luís

Thank you everyone for your very generous comments!

@Shawn - I usually stack each night separately, and often I end up with a couple of stacks (broken down to those focused for the center, those focused for the edges). I then align all my stacks with Registar, and then combine them with Photoshop (using masks to mask out the unfocused portion of each stack).

@Luis - yes, I have my mount setup on a permanent pier outside my house. Its not obvious from this picture, but the top of the pier is over 20' high.
