I brought my next-door neighbor (single guy) half a slab of ribs I just pulled out of the smoker and in the ensuing conversation told him that his mercury vapor light was making it hard to use my telescope at night. Next day he was up on a ladder taping off my side of it. Positive? A little bribery never hurts.

I have met all of my immediately adjacent neighbors and they are mostly friendly people, which is why I like living here.

It helps a lot when you need to ask them about light issues... for example, the neighbor to my West had a motion-sensor activated security light on his back porch that was bare-bulb and was pointed nearly straight into my backyard. I mentioned it to him in passing, as we had gotten together for dinner a couple of times, just asking if he could adjust the sensitivity so it wasn't on all the time. The next thing I knew he had a completely new light that was shrouded, pointed nearly straight down and he has it set up to turn off completely after about 1am. Now THAT is a good neighbor.

And yes, he has come over a couple of times to peek through the scope. He and his wife had never seen Saturn before and were blown away.

Now if I can just figure out a nice way to get that other neighbor to shut his ratty dog up...

My neighbors are great, but that does not help me with my viewing. The trees grew too tall in the back yard for me to view. I don't view in the front yard because I don't want a car to drive by and its occupants see my telescope and accessories, and maybe mark my house for a hit. So, I drive about 22 miles for some not too bad Mag 4.8 skies. Mag 6 or better is 80-90 miles away.

Earlier this month, I had 68 people stop by on my driveway to see the Moon and Saturn. Of course TV news stories don't hurt.

You're very lucky to have parallel interests, kid ages, etc. Both families could benefit greatly from this fortunate set of circumstances. They should easily appreciate the benefits of the night sky and darkness. You appear to be set!

My neighbors' interest in the night is nil.

One neighbor claims to have a lot of sky knowledge. She says the Moon has sixteen phases. Points out Orion's belt overhead in early September. And of course we never landed on the Moon. The rest of the drunks write her off as a psycho-wacko.

Now I know why I enjoy the night sky all by myself.

Nevermind.

When I had the XT10 I would be outside in front of the condo on most clear nights. I met a lot of a.m. dog walkers who got a big thrill looking at the moon, Jupiter and Saturn. The children are the best, asking questions galore and stumping me.

Okay, I have a good experience. I live in a rural section of upstate NY with pretty good skys and only one neighbor who is about 500 feet away. They keep a porch light on at night that is a nuisance so I worked up the nerve to tell them I have a telescope and am out observing on clear nights and find their light shining in my eyes.
The woman of the house mentioned "light pollution" and a big smile came over my face. I offered to buy them a downward facing light fixture and her husband offered to put a plywood baffle on the end of their porch that faces my direction. He installed it the very same day!
I've since had their entire family over to observe including their two kids.
I feel very lucky to have such great neighbors especially since they are my only neighbors within 1/4 mile.

You win an "Attaboy!" for getting up the nerve. It paid off for everybody.
