Step up from Shorty 2x? new
      #5948683 - 06/30/13 09:02 PM

Looking to upgrade my Orion shorty 2x Barlow lens, and I was thinking the Celestron Omni 2x, is this better? Or do I need something else?

If you can afford to spend $80 I would suggest the 2x explore scientific Barlow. It is a telecentric design similar to the Televue Powermates.

Another one to consider is the Antares 1.6x Barlow, about $95. I use it with my 175EDF and it does not seem to degrade the optics.

Ouch, barlows are expensive! I was thinking more in the 40 dollar range

My suggestion is to hold off and save up till you can buy something like the Explore Scientific or Antares. I don't think anything in the $40 range will out perform your current barlow.

Justin,

If you have the 2x Orion Shorty with two set screws, and money is a concern, keep the Shorty. It is a good Barlow for its price. A 2x Tele Vue Barlow would be a step up from the Shorty.

Out of curiosity...what is it about the 2x shorty that got you thinking of upgrading? The views?..what?

Clear Skies!

I think the optical quality is a bit lacking, and I would like to have more light transmission.
