Fair price for a Pentax 85 ED scope new
      #5876405 - 05/21/13 05:22 PM Attachment (26 downloads)

Hi,
Looking at buying a 1983 Pentax 85ED / 1000mm [F.11.8] in excellent condition from my local optics dealer. Comes with box, EQ mount, motor drive, filters and set of Pentax .96in.EP's. [I think it's a claasic ?].
Cost would be around $US2300 which is around the price of a Televue 76 APO here in New Zealand.
There is very little info on these apparently rare Pentax ED scopes.
No reviews, no real information on the web. – nothing.
I know the optics and build qualities are high quality and they were expensive. Pentax stopped making astro. telescopes in 2008.
I do have a Pentax brochure from the mid 1980s with Halley's comet predominant on the cover. They had a 100mm, 85mm, 75mm, 65mm ED / achro versions along with the J80 and J60 series. The ED's had the SMC coatings and the .96 Eps.
Unsure what ED glass they had back then. It does in the brochure it states
'extra low dispersion characteristics surpassing Flourite'.
Expensive, but I feel this is a good buy but I am an emotional buyer so more sensible comments would be appreciated.
[I have not been able to use the scope as yet].

Chris

Hi Chris,

I have owned the 70mm and 85mm non-ED scopes. Both were great telescopes. I believe I sold the 85mm scope in about 2004 for $900. I see mine and two others have been sold since then for around $1200. I also saw a 100ED like yours go for $1800 with mount, drive, and ep's a while back.

The 85Ed is a very rare telescope. Classic prices have risen over the past few years. I think $2300 is on the high side and I would feel good paying $1800.

Steve

Hi Chris
I presume you are referring to the scope on trade me.

I am certainly watching it. At f-12 an 85 mm apochromatic doublet is going to be pretty impressive.

The eyepieces especially the 5 and 7 mm Ortho's are worth a bob or two to a collector if they are in good nick.

I have seen a similar scope at a star party in the South Island a few years back.

Having said this this size scope is going to have limitations due to the small aperture. The 100 mm f-10 version that followed this telescope is legendary.

Hi, Kevin yes that's one I am referring too. It has been re-listed from a very overpriced NZ$2800 reserve. [US$2100]. Unsure what the reserve is now probably $2000 + [US$1500] so it's still not cheap even for a classic scope like this. In NZ you can get a Televue 85 OTA for NZ$2200. [US$1700]. It does seem a nice condition scope and very collectable. Very tempting but my credit card is in a sad state of affairs.

Chris.

I agree.

It is also in the South Island and shipping could well be a real risk.

I have a nice homemade scope based on a Zeiss AS80/840 lens which would probably compete with this scope.

85 mm is not really enough aperture to give the best planetary views, having said that the 100 mm Zeiss 100/1000 I owned for 10 years did really deliver. It was a 3.9 inch fluorite triplet f-10 as opposed to a 3.3 inch doublet f-11.5.

Kevin
