I sprayed the guide scope tube and finder tube with the paint that was color corrected to the main tube color. It looks really nice and I think will match perfectly. I'm going to try to buff the tube later with a light rubbing compound to get some very light overspray to polish out. Is that the correct way to do this?

Here are a lot of black satin parts that were finished today. Black satin paint over green etching primer. It should hold up well.

Reverse side with the "crinkle" black finish. Nice touch, eh?

The original button were all but falling apart and faded. I looked everywhere for similar looking buttons with metal rings, but could not find anything. I settled for these and I like them, period.

I wanted to give you guys an idea how close the tube color came out. If you remember, I took the large tube to the paint store for color matching and they used a specialized camera and software to come up with the paint formula. Here is the finder I painted next to the tube. Any complaints?

Looks like you're getting dangerously close to completion and re-assembly, Tom. Got a finish date in mind yet?

Looking good!

It slowly is going back together. I may be taking a week off to NYC so it could be 2-3 weeks. Parts are pretty much done.

These things are great and they make them same day as you order and send them out. I gave David my exact sizes and his wife makes them up.

Well, this guy is all together. Had to remove some paint from the focuser end for the tube to fit, but a little sanding and a drop of oil and it slipped on.

Still looking for the thumb screw.

This scope is likely going to be better than new when youre finished.

It should be. With the materials we have today (paint, etching primer, electronics) we can make these better then back then. I also have several hundred hours in this thing, something that Cave could not afford. He did do one thing right though, the mirrors! Can any of us honestly say (excluding David) we could make a better mirror?

He just lives about 30 minutes from me. Nice caps, but I mold my own from fiberglass.

I think that is a compliment. My advice to any vintage and antique telescope collector and restorer is to put as much effort into testing and restoring the the optics as you do restoring the mechanics of the scope. That way the view in the eyepiece will equal or exceed the view of looking at the telescope. You might be surprise at what you find out when you ACTUALLY test the optics in your scope on the bench vs assuming that they are as good as you think. The same rules of time vs money in the mechanical assembly of the telescope by the original manufacture also applies to the optics as well.

- Dave

I totally agree with David here, it is, in the end the optics that you want to be the best that they can possibly be. There`s places that will test and even touch up the figure if needed. We wouldnt restore a car and not do the engine
