Good Apps for Android besides Google Sky?
      #5952170 - 07/02/13 10:13 PM

I use Google Sky as my guide right now. I went to Barnes and Noble and all they had was "Dummies Guide to..." so I did not get anything. I will get one of the reference sky charts/books listed in the beginners sticky thread.

I would also like to know if there are any good apps for Android to help me out. There seems to be plenty for iOS.

Maybe I don't need any...please advise.

There are a few threads about this floating around, but my recommendations are:

SkEye - Similar to Google, but more robust

ISS Detector - lets you know if/when there are ISS passes and Iridium Flares

Astro Panel - Gives forecasts for visibility, seeing, cloud cover, etc...

Clear Sky Droid - Also gives forecasts for visibility, seeing, cloud cover, etc...but I like the interface of Astro Panel more

StarLog Free - Log Messier and NGC objects you saw

So far I've been satisfied with the free version of SkEye. It does, however, have some different star names than my star atlas, and sometimes its names for various clusters are relatively unknown.

Johnny:

The short story: Sky Safari Plus or Pro. The Plus does everything you will even need to do, the Pro does everything you could ever imagine doing.

The long story:

I think I have tried them all, both free and fee... There was a time when there were no Android astronomy apps comparable to the iOS apps.. I even resorted to borrowing an older iphone to run Sky Safari.

But thanks to pestering from folks like myself, Bill and Tim at Southern Stars ported Sky Safari from the iOS to the Android. It's been a joy to use, it's a big help starhopping, it's a big help planning. For many objects, it includes detailed discussions of the object including observing tips, how to see it best. It's like having a super desktop planetarium on your phone or tablet that also has all the nice features available to a phone.

Sky Safari for the Android

Jon

As it happens, that's quite a good book.

+1 for the SkySafari.
I use it on my CPC1100 - besides being a great night sky reference; the scope control & go-to is perfect!!

sky safari plus, dont bother with anything else, the cheaper version is pretty limited and the pro version has more stuff than needed, plus is the way and nothing on any OS compares to how good sky safari is.

Another quick chime in for Sky Safari. It really an awesome program. I have it for both iOS and for Android, and aside from TheSkyX on my PC, I've not found anything that compares.

I see that SkySafari requires Android 2.2 or better.

And here I am wuth two devices (Nextbook2 7" and generic Infotmic 10" ) running Android 2.1.Neither manufacture has an update to 2.2.

That's unfortunate.

If one is looking to an Android device to run Sky Safari, make sure it has access to the Google Playstore, many inexpensive Android tablets cannot access the Playstore, it requires certification by Google.

Also required are a 1 GHz processor and Android 2.2 or higher.

It's best to look at southernstars.com for the requirements.

Jon

Here's what I use...

Android (my phone): SkySafari Plus, haven't found much else
iOS (my iPad): SkySafari Plus, honorable mention to Luminos
OS X (my iMac): SkySafari Plus, honorable mention to Stellarium

I think I see a trend developing...

Google Sky now installed on 10" Android 2.1 tablet. We'll see if it works tonight.(it is an infotmic SAWEE 10 bought used,of course, just to see if a tablet would be of use).

Have to find the charger for the 7"!

Why do I nee a different ac adaptor for every device?

Sky safari plus, and I bookmark clear sky charts and another bookmark for the jetstream forcast. I use evernote for my observing list (basically just a plain text file), but am always looking out for new options I that department, so I actually use sky safari's observing list to log my observing as I go.. then export to evernote.. not the best system but what I do currently. I have skeye and other ones but I never use them since sky safari does all that better , with more precision and detail and object info. Its the tool to get if youre serious

id also recommend some rubylith film to protect your night vision (if it wasnt mentioned didnt read the whole thread)
