Yet another Nova Hitch new
      #5951159 - 07/02/13 11:23 AM Attachment (71 downloads)

Well the day finally arrived, I got my Nova Hitch!!! First impression... WOW, this thing is one heck of a piece of astro gear!!! First off, packaging was first rate. Charles touched upon this in his Yahoo group but to seeing it in person is something else. Very meticulous packaging for sure which guaranteed that the mount arrived in excellent condition with not a scratch on it. What first really surprised me was the size and weight. I had originally wanted the Nova Hitch for a grab and go project but as development of the mount went on, the mount grew and grew. Still, I was really take back with the size of it. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get it under the stars because Miami weather has been and will be lousy for some time (summertime in Miami... WET!!!) Once I get a chance to put it through it's paces I will report back on it but for the moment, here are some photos for your enjoyment.

That's a really gorgeous mount. I may order one soon.

Noticed that you are using a Berlebach Uni tripod and that you removed the rubber padding that is normally on the top plate. So what happended to the paint on the top of your tripod plate?

Thanks.

Congratulations Sergio. It is just beautiful.

The slow motion controls seem to have been brought closer to the viewer based on pictures I've seen of previous mounts such as the Half Hitch. Are they comfortably close enough or just barely. And are extension flexible handles possible. Just curious.

I hope you can use it outside pretty soon. Looks like a lot of fun and will look forward to your impressions.

Best,

P.S. I love your un boxing photos.

jd, I removed the rubber from the top of the Berlebach in order to obtain metal to metal contact. I did not want to have any flex at all due to the rubber. After doing so, I think that it really will not make any difference. The glue that was used was spread over pretty evenly and the rubber was very thin. As you can see, there is a little bit left over that just would not come off. Soon I will remove the left overs and paint the top of the base with black paint.

Agatha, I am not sure if flexible handles are possible but I reach the controls just fine. Maybe Charles can chime in on this.

Instead of extension cables, my solution for those who want to reduce the reach to the control knobs is a robotic slow-motion control system, currently in the final stages of development. Obviously, there are other advantages to this approach beyond "reach."

I do think that the manual knobs are placed for easy reach, however. Maybe Sergio will report back on this issue once the clouds clear and he can actually observe with his new rig.

Charles

The knobs are for me comfortably within reach for a 8" SCT and TV102 and both me and my arms are short. I also removed the rubber top thingy from my Berlebach and it came off easily the residual stickem came off easily with WD40 no touching up the top needed. It looks like it was never there.

Steve=, I don't know what they used to glue my rubber top but it would not budge. It was a much more involved task than I ever anticipated. BTW, I am going to ad the cam locks to my mount. I read in the other post that you really like them so I am going to give them a shot.

Mine peeled off with very little effort I was surprised.

You will love the cam locks it is a transformative way to on/off the OTA.

I find the same for a 130mm/f6. Far more accessible than the same scope on one of the Half Hitch line of models.

Qban,
It looks like the OTA will contact the mount before you get to the zenith.

Actually, a 130 mm refractor does not contact the Nova Hitch at the zenith -- nor will a 155 mm refractor. Long OTAs might bump wide-topped tripods, but the Nova provides almost a foot of vertical tripod clearance without an extension column. It also provides 4.5 inches of horizontal tripod clearance.

See the attached photo of an AP130GT pointed at the zenith on a Nova Hitch.

That is as close to zenith as I can get but it is not due to the mount, it is due to the focus knob!!!

Sergio - looks fantastic!

Won't be too long now before I get my own Nova (+ tracking!)

Can I ask which Berlebach tripod you have please...?

Clear skies,

Damian
