First attempt at medium format
      #5952765 - 07/03/13 09:27 AM Attachment (61 downloads)

I shot a roll of medium format Fuji Provia 400 last month and have been spending the last few days working with the scans. nothing spectacular here, just wide field shots of the southern Milky Way, which, as you can see is quite close to the horizon at my location. I was using a Yashica A, piggybacked and unguided, shooting at f/4 for approximately 5 minutes. There are some other shots that I hope to stitch together, but that is not something that I have yet gotten started on. based on the results from this roll, I am now stopping down the lens to f/5.6 and doubling the exposure time to see what the differences are. I will most likely not get those results back for a while though since there is still unexposed film in the camera.
Hope you enjoy!

Great first results! Stopping down will surely give you better results. Watch that guiding!

Thank you for the encouraging words. Hopefully I will be able to post a few more in the next few days.

Another shot from the same night, this time of the Scorpius region. A little too much light pollution from Green Bay, but not the worst.

Vandkc, very nice color rendering of your shots. Did you adjust the color by software or is it natural? What is the focal length of your lens? There is quite a lot of noise for medium format. A better scaner would help. Keep posting!

Thanks, guys. Michal, the color balance is more due to the post processing in Photoshop as the original scans have a very redish cast to them. The lens on this camera is 75mm f/3.5, so it does not have the best light gathering ability. I am using a Epson V500 scanner, so you night say that my equipment is pretty low budget! But I must say that I am pretty happy with the results thus far - especially with the equipment on hand - and it has encouraged me to try and improve upon what I have already done. The second roll has been sent off to the developers so I will be able to see what impact stopping down the lens has had.

Here you can see how the original scan looked compared to the processed one:
