I don't write it unless one experienced in such matters agrees.

Approved:
Axiom #1 - Smaller is Better.

A good technician can not only repair that which he has little knowledge of but intuitively make it better than it was when it worked.

Axiom #2 for your approval:

If one purchases a new telescope it will become a cloud magnet
If one builds or restores a telescope Clear Skies abound.

What say ye?
Douglas

Corollary:
If one buys a solar telescope, one is doomed to cloudy daylight hours.

Smaller is not better when it comes to aperture.

Clear skies abound only during the actual construction or restoration. Once complete, it effectively becomes a "new" telescope as far as the clouds are concerned.

Axiom proposal #2 Part 1 Revision 1:

If one buys one then one buys two,

If one buys two then two will dew,

If two do dew then one buys two.

Axiom proposal #2 Part 2 Revision 1:

If one builds or restores a telescope that falls in a forest does anyone hear [@#$%!!] it.

I think this one is actually atributable to Dr. Seuss.

Corollary: If one is in a forest with a telescope, one has chosen their observing site poorly.

I no longer buy into that.

With aperture comes focal length, with focal length comes a smaller FOV therefore in my experience aperture is only appropriate when trying to locate one tree in the forest.

but that's just me....and dare I say thousands of other 4"refractor owners.

Shouldn't you sell your 4" and buy a 2"? Maybe use the 2" for a while and when you think you're ready upgrade to a 1"?

So what's the focal length of your 4" Carton refractor?

Axiom #1.
I've also heard-
If it ain't broke, don't muck with it!

Axiom #2.
Regardless if bought or made, the darn clouds hide behind the treeline, and can communicate!

"Smaller is better" sounds too much like the old apology "It's not the pen, it's the penmanship".

And there's a can of worms. So to speak.
