LXD75 fell into swimming pool and SURVIVED
      #5954266 - 07/04/13 02:33 AM

A few weeks back, a big bad gust of wind tossed my LXD75 into a swimming pool. The mount was COMPLETELY submerged, but is now BACK IN ACTION thanks to some great advice from CN'ers on how to resuscitate it. The thread is in the "General Observing and Astronomy" forum on CN, it you want to read the details. I just thought I'd mention it here in the Mounts section, in case anyone finds this saga useful.

Might wanna think of a better method of securing it to the ground .

That's nuts!

Is it smoother now that the chlorine broke down some of the grease?

The problem was that I put a big tarp over the mount/tripod, and the tarp became a sail that harnessed the power of the wind, enough to tip the whole assembly over, into the pool. Solution: no more tarp!

You might consider fitting the mount with these?

Tom,

I've had a mount blow over before too. I don't think I'd forgo a tarp/cover just because rain is probably more dangerous than the random gusty winds.

The coolest thing I've seen to solve this kind of problem is to sink an anchor like you'd see on a child's playground. Then, use ratchet straps to attach the scope. It won't go anywhere.

Best solution is to sink a pier .

Sad to hear that! It was the perfect excuse for an upgrade :P

Cheers,

Jose
