But now I've decided that I really need a handle for my DM-6, so I'll probably be emailing you anyway in a few days.

Best regards,

The handles rock. I have both the 18" and the 24", both angled. Really useful, especially when you want to quickly pan the scope from one side of the sky to the other without having to shove the focuser/binoviewer/etc.

Hi Mark, thanks for your input on the handles. Can you slew to the zenith without the handle hitting the tripod? And if so, what type of tripod are you using? (I've got the standard height DiscMounts wooden tripod.)

No, it does hit the tripod riiiiiight before zenith. Not an issue for me though as I can't see exact zenith from my spot anyway. I'm using the Berlebach Planet with an 8" extension, and the 24" handle. A longer extension would allow the scope to reach zenith without a problem, I think.

Thanks for the info, Mark. It sounds like the 18" angled handle will work just fine for me. I'm using an 8" extension on my mount as well.

Though I don't think it was built for that, the DM 18" angled handle can be reversed to allow very close to zenith viewing and well worth having for refractor ota's.

Cool! Thanks for the pic, Jim. I just emailed Tom to put in an order for an 18" angled handle.

Hi Scott,

Hopefully your DM-6 came with the Discmounts saddle that is drilled for the handle, because I know that some have put ADM saddles on which would need to be drilled for the handle. Anyway, the handle is great .

BTW....I love my pretty DM-6 wrench.
When I ordered my DM-6 last fall, I was actually going to order one for a spare so I would have 2. But Tom talked me out of it. What a great guy. And I also agree with Chucky above, with the reasons for the price.

Scott, you'll love the mount...have fun with it.

Best,

My handle was hitting the leg on my Stellarvue TSL7 tripod I use with the DM6 so I (with difficulty) peeled off the grip and sawed off a few inches. Then lubed it up with a little soapy water and put the grip back on.

Dave

You can also rotate the saddle 180 degree so that the handle is on the upper edge of saddle. In this case, if the handle will hit the tripod leg, it would be after your OTA pointing to Zenith.

The drawback is: if you are using binoviewer or heavy eyepiece, the center of gravity may be a little higher thus limit the balance range. And you cannot use the starbeam any more.

Yep, I've got the DM saddle with the dual-clamp knobs. It's a very nice saddle, indeed!

I have my DM-6 on a Planet with the 8" extension and an 18" bent handle. It does (eventually) hit the tripod. I had a machinist cut a 2"x6" round of aluminum that I place under the extension. Bombproof. It's a great mount--the best!

Dark skies.

By the way, it's quick and easy to remove the handle, and put it back on. So one could simply take it off to view at exact zenith, and then put it back on for the rest of the sky. Of course you wouldn't want to do that every 10 minutes, but if you want to use the scope with the handle in normal position and also view zenith sometimes when there's an object there you want to view, it allows you to do both.

Hi All,
Mounting the handle on the DM-6 Saddle (8" Tilt-in) you can also use the two handle mounting screws in front which will shorten the handle enough to miss most tripod legs. It wasn't the original plan but it works.

Tom

Good to know, Tom. Can't wait to get my handle!
