      #5958271 - 07/06/13 11:01 PM

It's a question that I have a hard time with,,,
love my mounts and I am always excited to get new ones (over time), same for the scopes,,
I am not sure what excites me more.. a new scope or a new mount? either way it's still the kid looking in at the candy store.

I like scopes on manual tracking alt-az mounts so I would have to say that I am more excited by a new scope than a new mount.

Of course, with a Dob, it's a package.

A scope will get you through times with no mount better than a mount will get you through times with no scope .

Or is that the other way around ?

most scopes are white and boring. like sid vicious said," boring, boring, boring, scopes are boring"

now the M-uno has some style.

Being an aircraft mechanic and total gearhead I appreciate complex mechanical things. A telescope mount with all the precision gears, motors, and machined surfaces is poetry in motion. Watching a high speed slew complete with the sounds of calibrated gears and motors will bring a smile to my face quickly.

Some of the most amazing mounts in my opinion are the monsters that RCOS builds. Check out these videos of them in action during tests:

RC Optical Systems 24" Afocal RC with 10" Acquisition Scope, Coudé Path, and Slip Ring:
http://www.rcopticalsystems.com/gallery/video/bdvideoweb.mov

RCOS 0.81m Ritchey-Chrétien Telescope and Equatorial Fork Mount:
http://www.rcopticalsystems.com/gallery/video/Equatorial%20Mount%20web.mov

A good mount is essential for astrophotography, tracking moving objects accurately, and being able to repeatedly see the same section of sky on any given night. I am way more excited about the craftsmanship and precision of a finely machined mount than I am of a precision telescope sitting in a homely wooden box.

OK, I want a mount that needs a flashing light on it so you know to get the hell out the way when it's slewing!

LOL that thing is serious isn't it!?! It slews so fast and smooth you could probably swat a mosquito with it too! Admit that if you could afford to buy and house that monster it would be in your backyard right now. You could do a Messier Marathon in record breaking time.

For me its neither the scope or a mount but how they work together as a well orchestrated symphony that excites me...

A mediocre OTA on a super mount gets you mediocre results!

A super OTA on a mediocre mount gets you mediocre results!

Put an optically top notch telescope on a well engineered, stable, super performing mount and that is what gets me excited...

So far I've managed two such excellent setups out of three, the third is a project in process causing much frustration at this time...

My first scope had a wobbly mount and I hated that mount. When I finally built my own, I went for overkill. So I like both. Nothing like great optics on a steady, driven mount.

Hi,
I like mounts. I like tinkering and adjusting them to get the best performance. Spot on goto's and really low PE. The only problem is my most recent mount is performing so well out of the box there's nothing to work on. Now if Celestron would just release the StarSense I would have another toy to add to my mount.

You won't be able to see much trough the scope either if the mount is shaking all around or doesn't have smooth movements. The mount is at least half as important.

I always found the mounts of HUGE professional telescopes astounding. Many tonnes (hundreds?) of machinery and optics moving with such precision. It's amazing! An absolute triump of engineering!

Now, as to those flashy, Italian mounts: Prissy-looking. Mounts for "girly-men!"

(It's just a joke. )

The mount!,100%.

I have a 16 inch ASA Astrograph on a Paramount ME.
The mount: excellent mount with excellent build quality even the inside looks great , very good and complete software package.

The ASA astrograph: for Euro 18000,- pricetag very poor overall quality ; dirty mirror at delivery, loose decoration rings, loose black velvet inside (glued to tight), unstable focusser software, zero information about wiring, handling, cleaning and collimation at delivery, sandwich "carbonfiber" tube: the carbon fiber is paperthin, average mirror quality, incomplete at delivery (no excuse or explanation), the 1.8X Barlow (1150,- euro) has poor internal blackening... I'm very dissatisfied in ASA.

No doubt, I would have said scopes when I started out but after many years now of actually using scopes - I have to say that mounts have become pretty exciting. I am of the opinion that in practice, a given scope is only going to be as good as the mount it rides on.

Hi,
I like polar scopes. My CGE has ASPA but I just enjoy using them for the fun of it. Except my CGE I bought earlier this year didn't have one so if anyone has a Polar Axis finder for a CGE mount they are willing to sell please let me know. I would like to buy one. It's Celestron part #94222. Please send me a PM or email.
I do like mounts over optics. The more gadgets the better.

The older I get the more I like simpler mounts that just work. Example is this one for a 4-in f/4 refractor.

Great mounts are similar to fine Swiss watches. So I have to say mounts are more exciting and nicer to look at. But as a visual observer, if I had to choose between a great mount and a great scope, I'd pick the scope.

What excites me is when my brain and budget work together, and I actually manage to match scope, mount, and needs.

I appreciate what a good mount can do and the engineering effort that goes into it but the scope is the bit that is more exciting for me. I imagine that my habit of plugging an eyepiece rather than a camera into my scopes biases my answer somewhat.

I have always considered the mount to be the most important part of the system -- but my Dob mounts do not excite me at all. They are solid and functional -- nothing sexy or artistic about them.

My Mach 1 on the other hand, is both sexy and artistic - as well as being solid and functional.

Cheers,

Ron

Right now I must admit that I'm most excited about mounts. Just last night I was able to control my newly acquired, used mount for the first time after installing SkySafari on my iPad and hooking up the wireless SkiFi adapter to the RS232 connector (input). After listening to the mount follow whatever object I chose "in the sky", I called my wife over to show her how "way cool" that was. This was all in our living room and sans scope.

Her response was "isn't that like cheating?" Bless her heart. She hasn't asked me how much all of this cost.

Clear skies to all!

Wow, this is a tough question...kind of like asking a man which excites him more, his wife or his girlfriend! I have neither, so I can get away with comments like that!

As many have said, can't use a good scope on a bouncy mount, and similarly, you can't enjoy the skies without a good scope. But, I guess for me, today, the scope is what excites me most. Even though it is an older C8, I really enjoy it.

I hate mounts. They shake and get in the way and if they don't they weigh four times as much as the telecopes.

I hate telecopes. They all have some kind of aberrations or compromises and I like perfection. You just can't get it in telescopes. They all have some kind of issue (Even APOs, where the issues is size and weight for the aperture, which has to rate at the bottom of the barrel in the telescope world).

The big problem is that I need both to look deep into the sky.

So for me, neither of these excite me at all. Looking at the sky excites me and these are but tools I use to accomplish my goal.

That being said, I do appreciate well made things, and here, mounts have more "Character."

But I never ever get excited about mounts. Not even a tiny bit. I hate all of them. If I could levitate my telescopes into the right position, not only would I be quite famous, I would also be much happier about observing.

And if I could have a 14" telescope with a 1200mm focal length that was coma free and had a flat field with a 20% obstruction, It could look like a garbage truck and I would just levitate it into position and smile a lot...

For me it's the scope that gets my attention. Without good optics the mount good or bad doesn't do you much good. I bought a C102GT f9.8 and I bought a iOptron Cube Pro and thought it would handle the scope ok. It handled the weight ok but the tube is too long for the tripod. Too much wiggle!!!

So I just bought an Orion Skyview Pro Goto and it's fantastic and will handle the 102 just fine. So the mount does play an important part. But I wouldn't have bought the mount if the scope didn't warrant it! The C102GT is a great scope for the money.
